Answers to Random Questions

When we were first about to start our adoption journey, I know I had random questions.  And then when we were presented with situations I had different questions.  Anyone want to post the questions they had and what they learned, so others can benefit from the info?

Prior to beginning, I wasn't sure if we would be approved because my husband has a history of drug and alcohol abuse (just celebrated 10 years of sobriety in Sept!).  Obviously every agency is different, but the social workers at DCF were awesome - they all said the same thing, "Your unique experiences may be useful in relating to the children you take in and their past."  Our social worker did request that Jeff speak to one of their addiction counselors, so during the home study the counselor came over and met with MH privately.  Her report was included in our home study.

When we were called about the girls, the biggest red flag in their medical file, besides prenatal exposure to drugs, was that mom was Hep C +.  A friend who is a doctor did some research for us and talked to specialists at her hospital, and reassured us that there is a minimal (2-4%) chance the girls would have contracted it from mom.  Also, if they did contract it the prognosis was very good.  The hospital where they were born recommended we have them retested at 2 months (they tested negative at birth), but the research our friend did as well as the research our pediatrician did all states that we should wait until 18 months.

4/11 Started adoption process for 2 siblings through DCF. 10/12 Found out we are licensed! 12/14 Brought 3 week old identical twin girls home from the hospital.  Could be at least until Summer 1015 til we know if they are forever ours

    I just want to say that I've followed your story for quite some time (since your kinship placement) and I'm so glad things are going well with the twins, and congratulations to your husband on 10 years of sobriety- that's no small feat!
