Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Zantac for baby

What are thoughts on Zantac for a one month old? Her dr suggested it bc she sounded congested and had spit up a little that she said smelled sour. She hadn't had any other symptoms and never seemed in pain until all of a sudden today she seems in pain before she spits up. We had decided to wait until her 2 month apt but now I'm wondering if it's worth a try. Any moms use Zantac for babies? I used it while pregnant so I'm sure it's safe I just don't want any unnecessary medications.

Re: Zantac for baby

  • We use it for our son. He was a screaming, gassy, spit uppy mess. Now he is at least 50% better. Worth it for us.

  • We used zantac on DS, but he was 6 mos. It's worth a try.

  • We just started DD on it last night. How long does it usually take to see a difference?

Also, how are you guys giving it to your LOs? DD just spits it out. We had it flavored per recommendation of our Pedi.

We started our DS on it at 4 weeks and we saw a major improvement within about 48 hours. Our pedi did say it can take a couple weeks to reach therapeutic levels and notice a huge difference.

We just try to put the dropper kind of far back and in his cheek so he can't spit it out as easily.

As far as the OP's concerns, yes, it's generally safe but like anything else there can be side effects such as headaches, constipation, and an upset stomach.

  • At 6 weeks we started our LO on Zantac. He always had gas issues but at 51/2 weeks it became apparent something else was going on. He gets .8 ml 3x a day and I saw a noticeable difference in 2 days. He still spits up a lot but he is not crying in pain anymore.

We noticed a difference in her fussiness within a day or two.  She stills spits up a ton, but is now a "happy spitter".  When we first started giving it to her, we put it in the tip of a nipple and let her suck it.  She would suck it right down, but she soon started getting hip to that trick and wouldn't suck right away.  We started using the skinny syringe and squeezing it into her back cheek.  She still manages to push some out with her tongue.

We flavored with grape once (the only flavor they will use with Zantac) and we thought it was even worse, so we stopped after one bottle of grape.

  • DS has been on Zantac since 3 weeks old.  I knew the symptoms of reflux because DD had it as well at the same age and was put on Zantac.  It works great for us! he was a screaming, gassy unhappy mess with lots of spit up
  • See my pedi will not or is reluctant to prescribe it to our baby.  I think, along with all of my friends, think he has reflux.  At his appointment Tuesday I think I should demand it or find a new pedi.  He's gassy, spits up 5-7 times during a 3 oz bottle and 2-3 times after the bottle, and is super fussy!!!!  Could just be colicky too??  I'm read to pull my hair out!  He only seems to sleep soundly in the glider/swing (upright) or in my baby Bjorn.

We give DS his Zantac in a bottle of 1-2 oz of pumped milk.  The only reason we don't give more is because we want to make sure he definitely drinks it all.

  • This is a MEDICAL question--why would you ask the opinions of a bunch of random people on the internet with no medical training??

She asked if any other moms had used it and what occurred when they did. That's not a question for her pedi. I see nothing wrong with asking internet strangers to describe their experiences if she wants anecdotal imformation.
  • Been using it since 3w & dad is now 3 months. If dd like a pacifier munchkin sell ones that you can put medicine in. I bought 2 at the grocery store. It works really well for meds or gripe water with mine. Someone also told me squeeze babies cheeks & insert meds. They have no choice but to swallow. I do this with dropper & syringe & it works great! We tried previcid which I had to buy adult pill break & dilute. That's how I found about cheek pinching. Prevacid didn't work for us though
  • Dd has reflux & colic. Sounds similar to her. Here's what's worked for us all with approval or at suggestion of ped: keep upright for a long time after eating. Put pillow under crib mattress so they even sleep on incline. Don't put in car seat for min of 20 min after eating caz it puts pressure on belly causing spit up & upset (I don't follow this always caz it's not practical) we do hypoallergenic formula (REALLY HELPED)-much more expensive $30 for smaller can but worth it caz it keeps most of the food down. I tired switching back & dad spit it up right away. Either get ailimemtum by similac or nutrimentum by emfamil-ask ped for samples if them. They prob have them & it's worth it to avoid spending the money for first try. We now do 1 tsp/oz of formula to help dd gain weight (10% for her age) and that's also helped keep food down. Also probiotic. GERBER drops are labeled colic drops. Also dr brown bottles so she doesn't swallow air. Hope some of this helps. I've tried so much & it's honestly trial & error but you become a master overtime. Also I swear by our mammaroo seat. So worth the $$ for colic!
  • We started Zantac Saturday night. DS was throwing his head backwards and arching his back during burps. He def spits up, not a huge amount and he gets the hiccups often.

He seems to be calmer and happier so it's been totally worth it! He gets 1ml in a little breast milk twice a day (it tastes/smells nasty). I noticed an improvement 2-3 days after we started the meds.

  • Thank you everyone for weighing in. As it turned out we started Bay on zantek last Friday and on tues she started 3 days of not sleeping, spitting up a lot more than before and being much fussier than normal. We took her back to the dr and she's fine but we took her off the zantek and now she is back to herself and barely even spits up. The dr wanted to switch to Prevacid but at this point I'm keeping her med free.
