New baby bottles, how to prep for first use

So we got a bunch of bottles at our shower and I know they need to be cleaned before the first use. My question is, is it ok to hand wash then put through dishwasher cycle for sterilization? Or is it absolutely necessary to sterilize them in boiling water?

  • I always sterilized in boiling water the very first time. However...you don't know what type of bottle your LO will like...I wouldn't clean all but a few if I were you.

  • I hand washed then steamed. We dont have a dish washer.

  • Everything I've heard/read about says bottles don't need to be sterilized in anything other than a dishwasher or by hand in hot soapy water.  You don't want the oils/chemicals in the plastic leaking out.
  • Wash in hot soapy water then throw in the dishwasher.  No need to sterilize.  They'll become "unsterile" as soon as air hits them anyway.  If you really want to sterilize them wait until after baby born is do it in the microwave.
  • I'd sterilize them. Pretty sure the bottle instructions suggest that too.

  • Sterilize them. You don't know how long they've been sitting in the store or in a warehouse. Yuck.
