Outsmarting us...

We are using M&Ms (a very rare treat in our house) for rewards during potty training. Now if his little behind even touches the seat, he announces that he's done and wants his candy. Should we give him one M&M for trying or stick to the original idea of rewarding him for actually going?  He will be 3 in May.
