advice would be much appreciated

I'm 29 weeks with 3rd child. My appointments are still once a month, until 34 then he said we will talk about changing it up, but I'm already 3 cm dilated & have been having contractions off & on since 25weeks. I'm not sure if my Dr is paying enough attention to this but last time this started happening my child was 5weeks 4days early. I got upset since I was at the hospital 2 weeks ago & they said I should probably be taken out of work but my Dr said I'm fine just take it easy & not do as much. I mostly sit at work now,but nothing has changed as far as contractions, they seem to be getting more consistent. I asked a few other facilities if they would consider taking me on as a patient but they said I'm to far along...

  • Yeah definitely stick up for yourself! especially knowing you have a history! I kept pressing my history of cervical issues ever though my doctor said I was fine from 18w. He ended up sending me to a radiologist and everything WAS fine but I am relieved to have had a second look past 26 weeks. Good luck!!!

  • Agreed. He should be checking you weekly if you are 3cm and history of preterm. Take it easy too. Hope you get what you need from them
  • That's crazy. I would pregnant-freak out on him.

  • Can you check in with L&D nurses at your hospital and see if they might know of a dr who will take a patient late in their pregnancy? Was he your dr with your first two?
  • Thank you all firstly, secondly The only other person in his practice that isn't a medical assistant is his np who I've personally never seen. She is not in on my days that I can take off work. I've asked for her schedule or for a call back but nothing yet & it's been a week & 2 days. The other ob that delivered my first 2 kids retired. My fiance said he is going to take me to the hospital after work tomorrow if we don't get a call back from the np.
  • Wow I can't believe how dismissive your doctor is being! Especially with a history of PTL and that you previous child was born almost 6 week early! I would be demanding that he see you more often or refer you to someone that can. That is completely ridiculous that he is not following you more closely! I would be doing everything I can to find someone new that will take you more seriously and give you the care that you need and deserve.

Out of curiosity are you on or was it ever offered to you to get 17P shots this pregnancy to reduce the risk of PTL again? My doctors very strongly encourage any woman that has delivered before 37 weeks to get this shot as it has been proven to significantly reduce the risk of PTL. So sorry you are dealing with a sucky OB!
  • I would absolutely insist on being seen more regularly or I would get on the hunt for ANY other facility. You could even tell your current doc that if he won't see you more often then you'd like a referral to a high risk specialist. I know that my doctor would be taking that pretty seriously...
  • I would insist on being seen more often, and I am shocked he doesn't have you on bed rest in your current condition + your previous history. If he doesn't take your concerns seriously, I would switch. I know it's late in the game, but his level of care just isn't sufficient.

  • Yeah as someone who is not dilated or effaced but on meds and bedrest for contractions with a h/o PTL this sounds pretty crazy! I'd march into your doctor's office and ask for a referral to an MFM specialist. Not cool! 29 weekers are no joke... I had one!

  • I haven't heard of the shots I wish I would have, what is the name of the shot? I am going to ask my ob about them since he is obviously not offering the information to me.
I actually went to the hospital today due to a severe tearing pain they said the baby is still breech  gave me a shot to calm down the cramping & pain sent me home on bed rest. informed me they will send all the info they gathered to my ob & recommended I have a serious talk about my due date & how to prevent a repeat of my first experience. the nurse taking care of me at the hospital was surprised I was still working & wrote on the d/c order I take tomorrow off double my fluid intake since 101.6 ounces of water isn't enough to her, which will be fine by me if it helps.
  • I was on 2 or 3 meds with my twins for PTL, and strick bedrest. With mutilple stays in the hospital. My dr. was very careful with me, and I felt like I was in good hands. We made it 34 weeks. I hope your Dr. Starts to take care of you better! Just keep L&D on speed dial, and go there instead of the Dr.'s if your not feeling good. :/ so sorry. Hang in there!

  • Definitely speak up. You know your body better than he does. Also, speak with your employer so they understand why you can't do much at work.

  • Sorry you're going through this.

I'm high risk and I can tell you my doctor took me out of work since I became pregnant just based on my previous preterm labor. I've had a cerclage since 19 weeks and even before that I was seeing him weekly from about 10 weeks. I get weekly shots (every 7days & an u/s for cervical check) and I'm on bed rest. I can say this much you need to speak up and change doctors. I think I have the most playful funniest doctor, which is nice when I'm just going in for a routine check up but when it comes to this pregnancy I can say he's serious, attentive and very active in keeping me healthy and baby cooking for as long as she needs to be. He always tells me trust my body and if I'm in doubt call him or head over to L & D. I feel relax about this scary journey I've been on because of my doctor and I believe that's how it should be... Good luck I hope you're able to keep baby cooking and find a more attentive doctor to assist you the remainder of your pregnancy.
  • Pregnancy history should dictate your current care and if you are dilated etx he should be keeping an eye on you more thoroughly. I would insist on it!
