Communication Frustration

Miles so badly wants to tell us what he wants, but doesn't have the ability to do so just yet. Some things are very clear, like when he wants more dinner, or a drink, but other things are a struggle. We were playing with his activity table today, and he very obviously wanted it turned a different way than right side up, but damned if I could figure out how he wanted it. Poor guy was saying 'Bah bah' (that's kind of his go to sound) over and over and had some angry tears before I figured out how he wanted it (answer: on its side) We talk to him all the time and I feel we have a good understanding of the things/intentions he communicates with us. He clearly understands us more than we understand him. I'd like to alleviate his frustration, if possible. Anyone else going through this? Anyone using baby sign language?

Re: Communication Frustration

  • I've started teaching my LO some signs ('more'- when eating solids, etc), and it's helped with frustration a lot, but it's hard to stay super consistent, and there is still a lot to learn. I found a few books on Amazon. It can't hurt to teach him a few signs and see if it helps.

We use baby sign language for "more", "all done" and "hungry". But....they're 9 or 10 months old. Their receptive language is still almost non existent. I do know it is frustrating to not be able to communicate- my 3 year old sometimes can't tell me accurately what she's thinking!

  • I think everyone here is going through this and will for a while longer . . . at some point it will transition to them wanting to do EVERYTHING by themselves, which is a whole different issue.  Sounds like you are on the right track in communicating to him!

  • Yes we are having the same problems. I have been doing 10-15 signs with him since he was 6 months but not real consistently. I think he only understands Mama, more, and all done but he doesn't do them. Well...he claps when I do "More". So who knows. I've been trying to do it every day now. They will talk eventually and until then we are doing the best we can.
