Two Under 2

Supplies needed for #2

Hello! I have a 16 month old dd and have another dd arriving in April. We had a huge shower and got everything we needed for dd1. Since that wasn't too long ago I feel like I have everything I need, it just seems so crazy to not need much. So what did you need to purchase for lo2?
We obviously got another crib , dresser, room decor , mobile, and double stroller and plan to purchase new nipples for bottles but what else?

Re: Supplies needed for #2

  • All I purchased was a second crib and diapers.  I still have not purchased a double stroller because I wasn't sure what I really wanted and since it is so cold here we dont get out much.  If we do go to the mall we take our bob stroller and then use our travel umbrella stroller for my older one.  We RARELY go anywhere where one of us is alone with both kids so that seems to work for now.  Im going to wait on the double stroller purchase.  We use different bottles for our second so that is the only other thing we bought.  It does seem weird to not have to buy anything!

  • I bought extra wash clothes b/c I seem to go through a lot of them. And I decided to buy a 2nd boppy to keep one on each level of our house. Other than that just clothes. There's a lot less prep the 2nd time around.

  • I've had to buy a lot of new clothes too...even though I have 2 boys. DS1 was an October baby and DS2 was a May baby-so total opposite seasons. A few things like sleepers and onesie sets I've been able to reuse but most of the stuff didn't work out.

I was given a second crib for ds, and we had to get almost all new clothes since our first is a girl. We also bought six more cloth diapers. That was about it. DS is almost six months old, and we still haven't gotten anything else because all our baby gear is only nineteen months old and in great shape. I think this is one of the perks of 2u2.

Eta: We were also given a sit and stand stroller that we love.
    Mommy to N (3), J (2), and C (10 months). LO4 is due in mid-September.
  • The extra sheets is a good one that I forgot we got.
Other than consumables (diapers, wipes, etc), and furniture (crib), not much.
We were given a cheap swing that died after DD1, so we splurged on a new reliable swing for DD2.

Oh, and the great thing about having the same gender is the clothes, but we did get some new ones - that said "Big Sis" and "Lil Sis" and the like.
  • Diapers and wipes are a given. I also bought a going home outfit because i fekt it is momentous and shouldn't be a hand me down. Other things we bought/requested included nursery decor, nipples, double stroller, toilettries and clothes because DD1 is a summer baby and DD2 is a winter baby.
  • Sorry to jump on the bandwagon, but I've noticed a number of people saying they bought a second crib. I'm curious if it's really necessary? Is it a convenience? Did you get a second to match the first? Share your details.

Though my two will be 18 months apart, we are planning to keep #3 in our bedroom for about six-ish months before moving into the nursery with DS. That will make DS 2 years old and we were considering moving him into a toddler or a twin bed so that #3 could have the crib. Good/bad idea?

  • @TamaraR4  - Mine are 19 months apart and we didn't get a second crib. The plan was for baby to sleep in the pack n play in our room for about 4-5 months (which he did) and then transition DD to a big girl bed around that time. Turns out, she climbed out of her crib when DS was 2 weeks old, so we put her right in a big girl bed then. We plan to do the same this time around, hopefully escaping 3 under 4 with just one crib. :)

  • oh yeah, I was going to add...OP- if you don't already have one, I would invest in a good baby carrier. I don't know how moms of 2+ survive without one. :)

  • @TamaraR4, we bought a second crib because DD1 was still in hers and because both of the ones we got convert to toddler and later full-size beds. So, we wanted each child to have her own furniture that could be in whichever phase she needed at any given time. Does that make sense?

Agree with the carrier suggestion too. We had carriers before but got better ones. I prefer my Ergo because I can switch seamlessly between the baby and toddler depending on who needs it at any given time. And it allows me to be the most hands-free with both.
  • my 22 month old is still sleeping in his crib and showing no signs of wanting out of it.  He has always loved his crib so for us we had to have a second crib.

we bought another crib...DD #1 slept in our room for 2 months..so I'm guessing she'll still be using the crib by the time #2 needs one..plus they both convert to toddler beds, full sized headboards, etc and weren't too pricey.

We scored a bureau from a friend that we're repainting.

I bought some decor, a second camera for our monitor since we use it daily, and some crib sheets.

That's about it. I'm holding off on a double stroller. We have a UBV that we don't love but if need be it has a rumble seat that converts it to a doubble. We also have a nice umbrella stroller that we like. I just didn't want to unload money on a double. If we find out we do need it, we'll go buy it.

diapers and new nipples for bottles as well..but that's about it!

  • We waited until DD#1 was 3 months before we decided we needed another crib (until then she was in our room in her co-sleeper).  DS showed no signs of wanting out of his crib (he was 18 months at the time).  So we bought one then - DS's was a Bonavita Peyton Lifestyle crib, and we didn't want to spend that much money again.  We bought DD the BRU brand - Koala Home I think it was for $200 less, but they were both white and similar in style, which was important for us since the kids shared a room at the time.  Best decision we made - DS was in his crib until he was 3, DD#1 was in hers until she was 3yrs 4months, then we converted hers to a toddler bed (which by the way we just took off the front of the crib and used a $25 toddler bed rail from amazon).  DD#2 is now in DS's crib, and DS is in a twin.

For me, DS never tried to climb out, so I kept him in it.  It was important to me to have a safe place to put him while I did other things (put DD down for a nap, take a shower, etc).  But it depends on your kid.  If your kid is a climber and unsafely climbing out, you would probably want to get rid of the crib!  Good luck!
