Destination wedding in the Bahamas

One of my best friends got engaged last thanksgiving and is planning a destination wedding in the Bahamas on Aug 2. I am a bridesmaid so I definitely need to be there for the wedding. My due date is May 5th so my little one will be just short of 3 months. What do you guys think about bringing a baby that young out of the country. This is me and DH's 1st so we have no experience traveling with kids. I want to bring her since I can't imagine leaving her home with DH for essentially 3 days at that age but he's worry about her getting sick. My mother is invited to the wedding and has volunteered to help if we take her or to stay home if DH decides to stay home. The resort is a nice all inclusive right next to Atlantis so I believe it should be safe. I plan on asking my ob what she thinks but maybe you guys can help me think it thought as well.

Re: Destination wedding in the Bahamas

  • I would take a 3 month old over my toddler any day.  Especially if my mom and/or other help is coming along.
Personally, due to BFing, I would have to take baby. At that age because there is no chance I would have enough frozen milk for 3 days away.  And I don't know if I would be ready to be far away for that long.

FWIW, we are taking both kids to the Bahamas in December, so 2.0 will be about 7 months. I know it's a little older but I have no concerns about it.

  • The only concern is getting a passport quickly. You will need to make the appointment to get it right afterbirth in order to insure it gets to you in plenty of time.
  • I'm an FTM so I have no experience doing this with kids but I do have a lot of experience with all inclusives. I'd say that an AI resort is one of the easiest places to travel with a baby. You have a lot of flexibility there and it's a pretty relaxed atmosphere. I know it won't be as much with a wedding happening, but aside from that! If it were DH and I, we'd probably attempt it.

To my knowledge, there are no issues with water quality at resorts in the Bahamas, if that is one of your safety concerns. Paradise Island is also generally pretty safe for tourists, but like anywhere else you go, try to stay in the more populated areas and don't go wandering at night. Especially outside of Nassau's downtown area.

  • We took DD to Switzerland to see my parents when she was 4m old. The pedi recommended not to fly with a baby younger than 3m, because of the germs on the airplane. You want them to have enough time to build up their immune system and at least have their first round of vaccines. DD still got very sick every single time we put her on an airplane during the first year. Fevers above 103 for 2-5 days. The travel itself was very easy, she slept the entire flight. It's much easier to travel with a baby that young than a 9m old who wants to crawl up and down the aisle the entire flight and touch all the buttons! I think 3m is doable but a little on the young side. I think you really have to wait for the baby to be here and see how things go before making the final decision to attend the wedding, I'm sure your friend would understand.

  • Thanks for everyone's input. I'll see what my OB recommends as far as health concerns and if she's ok I'll be taking the baby but making it a short trip.

  • Which resort near Atlantis? Some don't allow children. I'm pretty sure the Sandals Royal Bahamian, for example, doesn't allow any children at all. A friend's sister got married there and my friend couldn't go because she didn't have childcare for her kids while her husband travelled for work.

It’s not that I don’t like you, it’s that I don’t know you. Stranger Danger.
  • We also have a destination wedding to go to this year, but in November so baby will be older at 6 mo. We debated bringing her along also with my mom in tow for assistance, but decided she will stay home with my mom to give myself and DH a little vaca from parenting. 3 months is much different. I would probably opt to take her if the pediatrician gave her the ok to go. Definitely if you're breastfeeding. Also I don't know the age to get a passport, infants may just need a birth certificate. Check the rules. Also check out the resort rules on kids like Redinlove said. Sandals would be a no-go.
  • It's called the memories grand bahamas and my friend new I was pregnant when she booked the place so they for sure take kids. I do plan on breastfeeding which is my main concern with not bringing her. She will have just started to drink bottled breastmilk as I will have to be back to work by then and I was hoping to not have to also try and get her used to formula yet...

Your OB knows all about your inside baby and your lady parts. Re: traveling with an infant you'll want to seek the advice of a pediatrician.

  • I would totally go and bring baby. It will be really nice to have your mom there to help!

  • Yeah I'm still meeting with pediatricians.... So I was hoping she'd at least have some advice so I can start from there. But I'm hoping to have a pediatrician soon.

  • I would take her. Sounds like you'll have plenty of help.

  • If your mom will also be there to help, I'd go and take the baby! As PPs have said, maybe just try and make sure you square things away with LO's pediatrician and get the passport in order early, but I think this particular trip sounds harmless!

  • GO GO GO!  Just like everyone else has said...it is soooo much easier to travel with young babies.  Esp since you will have a free babysitter in your mom!
If you're BFing, then the baby will get protection from the icky airplane germs from you.  Plus, I'd suggest wearing the baby as much as possible in the airport and plane, so s/he is as protected from others as can be!  Plus it will leave your hands free!
