Dentist and toothpaste

I've heard that you are supposed to take LO to the dentist at 1 year old to get them used to it.  Have any of you done that?  I'm not sure it's necessary yet..

Also, are you brushing LO's teeth and using toothpaste?  I brush them daily to get DD used to it, but don't use toothpaste yet.  If so, what toothpaste are you using?

Re: Dentist and toothpaste

  • I'm kind of a dental nut, but both kids went to the dentist at a year. For DD, we use a fluoride-free toothpaste.

  • L hasn't gone to the dentist yet, I am just not ready for the fight that it will bring on with her. I use the kids crest that is their starter toothpaste.

  • We use Colgate toddler toothpaste.  We brush their teeth nightly.

Our dentist said they don't need to see the kids until they are 2 or 3, whenever they have a chance of cooperating.  DD will be in 3 in March and has her first appointment scheduled for shortly after.

  • Colby has not been yet. He uses the Colgate fluoride free toothpaste. I brush with toothpaste every night before bed and let him "brush" with water in the morning.

  • We also use a toddler toothpaste - I think it's Colgate. I brush at night to make sure I really get them all, but she does it herself for a little while too. In the morning I usually just use water and let her chomp on the toothbrush a little.

My dentist also said he doesn't need to see her until 2 - 3. There is no earthly chance DD would let some stranger poke around in her mouth right now. She doesn't even like the pedi touching her, so I have no problem waiting.

  • No dentist until he has all of his teeth, we're only halfway there.

I can attest that bringing early does nothing to "get them used to it" when you are talking about yearly check-ups. 15 month old James was way better than 2.5 James. We start when they get their full set of one year teeth. Leo just got his last tooth so I am going to set up an appointment.

Leo still uses fluoride free toothpaste twice a day. I used Tom's but switched to Honest recently.

  • M&M still only has 2 teeth. She loves to brush them and we help her but, we don't use toothpaste yet and until she has more teeth we won't schedule a dentist appointment.

  • Our dentist wants to see they after they get molars, so DD has not been yet. Our pedi said no toothpaste until molars or age 2, whichever comes first. So for now we brush twice a day with water only. I have decided I don't want to use a toothpaste with sweeteners so we have a tube of toms kids for when we need it.

  • Around here the pediatricians recommend starting at six months. So as ridiculous as it sounds, we've already been twice. DS just had his second appointment on Tuesday. We brush daily and the doc said we could start using a VERY small amount of toothpaste with fluoride. We haven't yet, but we will see.

Honestly? I'm glad we started early. DS was very comfortable with the whole process.

  • Sophia hasn't been to the dentist... I'll probably wait until she's 2.  I do brush her teeth with fluoride free orajel toothpaste twice a day, and let her have a turn when I'm done brushing them.

She's been doing better about opening her mouth so I can get at her molars- for a while I had to encourage the mouth opening by making really silly sounds that she wanted to imitate.
  • Kate hates me brushing her teeth and often clamps down on the toothbrush. I try to brush them and then usually go over all (5) of them with a washcloth, just so I know they got clean. Then I let her play with the brush and I mimic what she's supposed to be doing with the brush...

  • I go next month and will ask. DS gets his teeth "brushed" morning and night. He's actually pretty good with it and wants to brush if he sees us do it. We have a fluoride free paste. Pretty sure it's bubblegum or berry flavor.
