Breaking rules?

Everyone knows that babies are safest on their backs and that you should not use bumpers in the crib.  

Recently LO started turning on his belly on occasion.  Contrary to most other opinions I have heard, our pediatrician's office told us to re-position him back on his back if we see this happening.  They actually suggested doing this until he is around 9 months old (!!)  He is a very robust almost-4 month old (more than 17 lbs) and he holds his head very well.  I am very tempted to let him sleep how he likes; I can't imagine how we will keep re-positioning him all night anyway.  

The other issue is that of the bumper.  LO has a tendency to rock his head back and forth sometimes while falling asleep or during sleep.  He moves pretty quickly and once in awhile I find him with his head up against the rails of the crib.  I am concerned that he might really hit his head hard and possibly hurt himself.  So, again, I am considering breaking the no bumper rule.  

I think that lots of experienced moms use bumpers and leave their babies to sleep in any position they like, but this is our first baby at home and we are pretty careful, so I am interested to hear what anyone else is doing...

2/2013 TI w/ hormonal support, prednisone, aspirin, Lovenox, acupuncture gave us a miracle BFP #5!
Heartbeat on U/S at 6w1d! Baby,please stay!!
Our miracle baby boy arrived 10/2013!  We are so in love!!

10/2014 Surprise BFP #6
Our second daughter arrived in May 2015!  We are so grateful!

    If LO rolls, he rolls. I done flip him back. I also have no bumpers, so if he hits his head, he hits his head. Im not worried about it

    Once DD1 could roll herself onto her belly to sleep I left her there. Granted, she was about 9 months old when she started doing it. 

    I used breathable bumpers with her when she started consistently getting limbs stuck in the slats.

    Your baby really doesn't risk getting up enough force from raising their head and banging it to cause anything more than a red spot.   But I wouldn't be getting up all damn night to flip a kid who knows how to roll :)

    I actually chuckled when I read that your LO's pedi told you to flip LO on back every time he rolls onto his belly. You'd never sleep if you had to do that. As long as he can lift his head & roll, I think he'll be okay. As for bumpers, I wouldn't recommend it. If your son hits his head, he may just have a little red mark or bruise... Nothing too serious. I had a friend who used bumpers & her LO died due to SIDS. It was very sad. He was born 2 weeks after my son so it definitely touched home for me
