**UPDATE** NBR: Fur Baby Concern

Update on the original post!

DH has been home for about a half hour & she is breathing just fine...no strange noises. I'm gonna lean towards reversed sneezing for now & keep an eye on her for the next couple of days. Thank you all for your kind words & support :)

And here's 1 more picture (as a thank you for all the responses!) of the little girl, in her bed with her "baby"

Calling all animal lovers & fur mommies!

Our Pug, Sadie, woke us up last night making the weirdest noise.....she sounds like she's got something stuck, like, not in her throat, but her nose? She's doing this really, really loud inhale that sounds almost like she's got a fur-ball stuck somewhere and it won't come out!

I wouldn't be concerned if it was just that one time - this shit went on ALL NIGHT LONG. She was still doing it this morning!  With the exception of this damn noise coming out of her, her breathing is just fine, but every few minutes (or every few breaths maybe), she will suck in a HUUUGGGE inhalation of air and sound like there's something lodged somewhere.

I'm at work now & I'm sure she's asleep in her bed (cause that's what Pugs do all day!), but I'm worried that she might have something else going on :(

Any thoughts?? Anyone else have experience with flat faced dogs & breathing problems?!

To thank you for reading, I present to you, Sadie! Here she is snoozin' on the couch in all her cuteness glory:

Re: **UPDATE** NBR: Fur Baby Concern

  • She is sooo adorable!
Could she have a cold? Or could she have been exposed to kennel cough? I saw a poster at our vet's office that said they can pick it up at dog parks, etc. Maybe it's something breed-related, like French Bulldogs?

I know almost nothing about dogs, but our big kitty boy (23lbs) snores most of the time while he's sleeping. And sometimes I think he makes a noise that sounds similar to what I'm interpreting your pup makes. He's never brought a hairball up, but he'll cough-wheeze-hack thing a few times in a day, maybe for a few days, and then we'll go weeks without anything.

I'm sorry I'm not more helpful, but I know how it sucks to not know what's going on with the furballs.

  • Hey Ally1986 - She kinds sounds like that, but louder...! I've heard of this before, but I have never tried covering her nose. She was a rescue (we adopted her 10 years ago) and she doesn't like her face being touched....I could try, tho...if she'll let me!

Thank you, she's pretty damned cute if I must say so myself :)

She hasn't been anywhere to pick up kennel cough.....she did just get over a bacterial infection, she was at the vet a couple weeks ago for that....but this just kinda came out of nowhere it seems. My husband gets home from work about 2 hours before I do, so I'll have him call me when he gets home to see if she's still doing it and I'll have to call the vet.

  • Push nosed dogs are prone to breathing problems.  I'd take her in to get it looked at because if there is something lodged, it'll only get worse.
Yeah, I think I will if she's still doing it when DH gets home. Thank you :)

look up something called a reverse sneeze, it could be that.

ETA: sorry was posting this ages ago and the phone rang. got back and realized i never submitted it. lol
  • My schnauzer has sinus problems.  We call him the grunter.  At night he does a big inhale that is grunty and loud.  We give him allergy meds and it's helped a little...but Vet said it's nothing to worry about.  I'd have her looked at just in case because she is a push nose dog.  Who is absolutely stinkin' adorable btw

Yeah, it's louder a lot of times. By the time I got my phone out to record it, he'd calmed down quite a bit.

It's terrifying the first time it happens, for sure. I hope it helps!

My mini dachshund does this, too.  My friend showed me the cover-the-nose trick and that usually stops him.  The sound may be exaggerated because your pooch is a pug... I'd still take her to the vet just to rule out any deeper problems (like if she found a small piece of plastic and got it lodged in her sinuses or something).  Not to scare you of course, but pets can get into all sorts of trouble!

Edited to correct gender pronouns ;)

  • @pudgybunny - Thanks for the info, that's what Ally1986 said, also :)

@Shannon1401 - The Grunter. LOL! That made me chuckle...! And thank you, we like her a little bit, too ;)

  • My Weimaraner does this too. Usually it lasts just a few minutes. Since it is happening longer I'd try to stop it by covering the nose. The other thing that happens a lot with pure breed dogs is their trachea actually collapses. If this is the case then there are surgical options to take care of it. Obviously your vet would have to diagnose though. If you notice it going on for great lengths of time I'd go get your babes checked out. Better safe than sorry!

  • We have a puggle who does this, he did it at the vets they said it's perfectly normally.

We have a smush face as well (a Boston Terrier), and weird sounds happen from time to time. Reverse sneezes do tend to be louder in smush face breeds too. Since you're worried, I'd video it and then take it and her into the vet. GL!

    ETA: autocorrect is stupid.

  • Awwww! She's so cute!! I def would take her to the vet or at the very least call them and see what they say. I wish you lots of luck!!
