Trouble TTC

Supplements Discussion

I'm curious how many of you ladies are taking any supplements, especially any that your RE recommended.  I meant to ask mine today but the appt. was a bit rushed (my fault - work meeting I couldn't move) and I only got through my questions on clomid, which I will be starting next cycle.  There are SO MANY supplements out there that are recommended by varying sources, for varying reasons, that even if I did decide to go buy some I wouldn't even know how to determine which 2 or 3 (seems like EPO and Zinc are frequently mentioned) I should try out of the 15 or more I've read about.

So, what supplements are you taking and why?  Or are you not taking any?

Re: Supplements Discussion

  • I just had the supplements talk with my RE. Their official position is that they aren't convinced that they help, but that they don't hurt. I'm taking my PNV, vitamin d, and coq10.

  • I asked my RE and she said the only thing I should be taking is folic acid.  My naturopath has me on a Prenatal, Vitamin D, Vitamin B's, iron, Omega 3 fish oil and COQ10.  I figure it can't hurt.

  • My re actually sent me home with a list a recommended supplements yesterday. She says I should be taking high dose folic acid, vitamin d, calcium and omega 3, dha, and EPA (if I was over 35 than coq-10 is on the list too). For dh the list is a male multi-vitamin without iron, omega 3 and vitamin d.

I also talked with her about soy isoflavones and how I used them to get a bfp. She said that anecdotally, in her office she has seen a number if people have success using them like clomid.
  • My RE just said to take a prenatal, but I also take a calcium/vit D supplement and coq10, which I got her OK to start. She said there's not a lot of evidence that it helps, but it won't hurt. And I figure most modern medical treatments didn't have evidence of effectiveness before they were studied and tested in depth, so just because there's no evidence right now, doesn't mean there's no benefit.

  • I take a prenatal but RE also bumped me up to 5mg of folic acid and added in CoQ10 over a month ago.  I know the studies on it are not overwhelming, but he is in the midst of collecting data to try and publish a study on the benefits of CoQ10, he has seen some promising data thus far.

  • @hope2bmom83 what is the cinnamon supposed to do for PCOS?
So many PCOSers have elevated blood sugars and/or are over weight.  Cinnamon helps reduce your blood sugar levels which can help with the PCOS.  I don't have too high of blood sugar levels, I am barely in the pre-diabetic range, but it helps.  People even without PCOS have taken it to help with weight loss.  The first week I took that and started back on weight watchers I lost 10 pounds.  You actually don't have to take the supplements you can just add cinnamon to your foods, but I prefer the supplements its just easier.  Here are the 2 links I read that convinced me to try it out.

  • Ok, I need to talk to my RE. I'm not on PNV's and I'm not sure why not. She knows that I'm on no supplements. I think I should take them? Is there anyone who knows of a reason I wouldn't be on them (besides that I'm not pregnant?)

My DH is on CoQ10, my RE said, "it won't harm anything, but it's probably not going to be magic either. It may have benefits for fertility, they just aren't proven yet."
    10/2013 - Initial consult. Started levothyroxine - tsh 2.92
HSG- showed graying in one spot/Saline Sono- showed 5mm polyp
DH SA -  abnormal -  36%motility on both SA's (count and morph ok on SA1, a little off SA2)
    1/10/14 - Hysteroscopy to remove 5mm polyp
    1/12/14- Medicated Cycle 1: 50mg Clomid + Ovidrel + TI = BFN
    2/15/14 - Medicated Cycle 2: 100mg Clomid + Ovidrel + TI = BFN
    3/18/14 - IUI Cycle 1: 150mg Clomid + Ovidrel + IUI = BFN
Upped Levothyroxine to 50mg - tested at 2.62
    4/17/14 - IUI Cycle 2: 150mg Clomid + Ovidrel + IUI = BFN
    Break!
    6/21/14: IUI Cycle 3: 150mg Clomid + Ovidrel + IUI

I think if nothing else you should be on PNV, it's recommended to start taking them 3 months before TTC.

  • I take PNV's- been taking them since we started TTC. I also take a separate folic acid pill. My gyno prescribed them to me before I started seeing my RE and I just continue to take them. My RE didn't recommend taking anything else so I haven't taken anything else but that might change since i'm planning to see a nutritionist.

    For my diagnosis/egg quality: CoQ10, L-Arganine, DHEA

All of these were recommended by my RE, including dosages. We changed my DHEA dosage after measuring it and my testosterone and finding the testosterone to be high.
