Report from Healz413 and Manada-- Updated Feb. 5--fertilization report

ManadaManada member
edited February 2014 in LGBT Parenting
It was a difficult retrieval, by the end the ultrasound tech was sitting on H. and pushing on her stomach. I heard wisps of them having a difficult time on the left accessing the ovaries while avoiding blood vessels and the bowel. The right ovary had more Endometriomas than we thought so follicles that looked clear on the us were just filled with blood.

In the end they got 10 eggs. It was pretty interesting because I watched them looking for them in the fluid (there was a screen in the OR that showed it).

So we will get a fert report tomorrow, and we will see how many are fertilized and growing.

We feel a bit disappointed with 10 eggs, we were hoping for 15+ but @healz413 was a champ and the endo was more of an issue than we knew. We are anxious because we know that 10 could either be plenty, or not enough to brave the attrition rate - but time will tell. We are still hoping for a 5 day transfer but will know on Friday if it will be 5 days or 3.

We plan to update this thread as we get more info. Thanks to all for your support.

Fertilization Report Update Feb 5: Well, we got really disappointing news today. Out of the 10 eggs, only 3 fertilized. We have now been switched to a day 3 transfer, which is Friday (if we have any embryos still growing). While we appreciate all the support and encouragement from this board, we would like to request that you NOT comment with things like "it only takes one." While that is true, at this point we don't even know if we will have one to transfer on Friday. Thanks so much.

Update: feb 7 - we have embryos! All three are still going and we have two Grade 1 and one Grade 2 embryos. We are going to transfer both grade 1 today and freeze the other. Thank you all for your thoughts and wishes. I firmly believe it is the collective power of the well wishes that is keeping this going.

  • 10 eggs is GREAT! Good job @Healz413!

Also, can I just say how amazingly cool it is that you were able to be in the OR at the time of the retrieval. I don't know if this is common practice for others, but my wife definitely was not allowed in the OR and I was knocked out under general anesthesia. Very cool that you got to be a part of that step in the process @Manada!

I will be keeping everything tightly crossed for a great fertilization report and a 5 day transfer! Have you talked to your RE yet about how many you intend to transfer (obviously depending on how things go over the next couple of days). Sooooo excited for you both! :)

@kh826, our RE strongly favors single embryo transfers. But I think it will largely depend on quality and quantify of embryos.

We're queer. I'm 33, have severe stage 4 endo, and had both fallopian tubes removed. My love ("Manada" on the boards, 32) was diagnosed with diminished ovarian reserve. We did Partner IVF (my eggs, her uterus). We lost our twins Tavin and Casey at 21 weeks gestation.

  • I'm psyched for your 10 potential babies! It is realistic to consider the attrition, but wait for tomorrow and see what comes. I hope things work out for a 5-day transfer of some high quality embies - but even so, I'm rocking my "worst" embie (a BC) so remember those quality grades are like splitting hairs - if they are willing to transfer it they believe it'll be a baby.  FX for all good news from here!

@Healz413, you are champ for enduring the process of getting to ER! @Manada will take it from here - physically anyhow. I will forever be jealous of partner IVF! So cool you two are really making a baby TOGETHER!

  • Thanks all! It is pretty exciting. It is also super nerve wracking as many of you know first hand.
@manada took the whole day off today and is taking such good care of me. She cleaned the whole kitchen (no small task) while I was napping and now she's off getting us wings and picking up my prescriptions. (I have to be on additional heavy duty antibiotics because the RE had to perforate a couple of my endometriomas and there is the risk of a nasty pelvic infection, apparently)
