Bottle Cleaning - Before 1st Use

When we had DD we used playtex bottles.  The instructions said to boil / sanitize the nipples and some other similar part in the bottom of the bottles and just to wash the bottle part before the first part.

We just got new Avent bottles for this LO, and the instructions say to boil / sanitize the bottle before first use.  I'm guessing this means the whoooole thing?!  Right?  The bottle, nipple, cover, etc?  I'm just worried about how they will hold up since they're plastic.  Am I just overly paranoid; should I just boil the whole thing and call it a day?

Re: Bottle Cleaning - Before 1st Use

  • I got a microwave steam thingy and did all of the parts for DS's nuk bottles. Honestly though, as I bought new bottles I never sanitized them. Just washed and used.

  • I usually boil new bottles (plastic) and pacifiers. They've held up just fine.

  • I boil. If it says to boil all parts it will be fine.

Would you recommend the "sanitize" cycle for the first time, or ever? We just got a new dishwasher a few months ago and it has a sanitize setting (I think it's just a high-temp wash). I've never used it, but maybe it would be good for bottles and stuff like that?

I have no idea! I don't have that setting, but I feel like the dishwasher water gets so hot anyway that it has to be sanitizing them!

  • @JmeJme good point. Especially with a heat dry ... that stuff comes out too hot to touch sometimes!

  • I just run everything through a sanitize cycle beforehand.

  • I boiled all parts of the bottle before 1st use. After that, I just used the Sanitize setting on the dishwasher every time. This time, I will probably boil them all again once, since they have been in storage, and then just do the dishwasher again. Never had any trouble with boiling plastic bottles.

  • Yes, you can boil (or steam sterilize) all parts of an Avent bottle. They hold up great.

  • Thanks all. I'll probably boil once and then on to the dishwasher!

  • I boiled everything before I used it.  The only issues I ever had was sometimes the nipples and pacifiers would get a little cloudy, but it never impeded their function.

I did boil the nipples from the bottles I used with DD and I added a little vinegar to the water to get rid of the cloudiness. Plus it's supposed to kill bacteria (like whatever causes thrush) which is a plus.

  • I never boiled.
Although I probably should have. We just use piping hot water and wash twice before first use.
  • We boiled our avent bottles the first time and then just handwashed after that. I didnt find the dishwasher got the, clean enough.
