Ants

Apparently my renters have ants.  Gross!  It is below zero here so I am a little confused about how it's even possible and I plan to check the situation out myself later this week, but they claim the ant traps are attracting more, not repelling them.  I plan on bringing over a can of raid and making sure they are actually cleaning, but what else has worked for you guys in regards to getting rid of ants?  We have never had an ant problem!

Re: Ants

  • It totally depends on the kind of ant you're dealing with. Are we talking little sugar ants? Huge ass carpenter ants? Something in between? You have to identify the ant before you can deal with the issue effectively... Get a picture of one then look through photos online to figure it out. Carpenter ants would be a preeeetty big deal and those suckers are hella hard to get rid of.

  • are they big carpenter ants or the small sugar ants?

we had small sugar ants and we have used Raid Ant Baits- put them in the corners on the counter and floors. we don't know where they came from- it was randomly one summer when DH and I first moved here. They worked perfect. Didn't see them the rest of the time we lived there.

  • They're sugar ants.  I was thinking to go spray with Raid and then leave a bunch of Raid packs for them to put in corners.  It's just in the kitchen so I'm thinking it's related to sweeping/mopping or a past spill that didn't get wiped up very well.

  • Oh yeah, completely forgot about oils. We use peppermint for spiders. Didn't know it worked on ants! I'll be sure to remember that if we get them here this summer!
  • Seal up the hole.  We lived in an old townhouse complex and there was a crack in the foundation.  We always put out ant baits and we would get hundreds of ants..the baits did attract more ants than even we had initially, but killed all the ones it touched.  But the problem continued from time to time because there were huge colonies outside.  If we hadn't been about to move, I would have insisted they try to seal up the foundation gap area.  We also had a small gap by the door so I put a lot of duct tape there and we would always have a bunch of ants stuck there and I think that tape alone was enough to totally prevent them coming in that way.  We did not want to spray (or even have them spray outside) since I was pregnant/had an infant and we had a cat.  Cleaning the counters and floor daily with bleach did nothing to deter these guys...  In another apt I randomly had a line of little ants strolling across my wall on sunny day, and bleaching that line out totally solved that problem and I never saw them again.  You may need several attempts with different approaches.
