I'm a FTM and never had one done before. What can I expect to happen? I understand you get a nasty drink, give blood and an hr later you get your results. Is that it or am I missing out on something?
My doctor said to eat normally that day and they gave me the drink so I can drink it before I go to my appointment. So I guess that means they don't need a baseline blood draw.
So moral of the story is, get instructions from your doctor. They might all do it a little differently.
Yeah, mine is way different. I'm supposed to fast for 8 hours and they do a baseline, a 1 hour and a 2 hour. And that is the standard at my office. Much different than others I've heard. Mine is next Wednesday. Woot!
Mine doesn't do a baseline blood draw. They gave me the drink to take home at my last Appointment. I have 5 min to drink it, then I have to show up at the lab 45min after I finish the drink so that they candraw blood at the 1 hour mark. I can eat/drink normally before the drink but then nothing until I have my blood drawn. I get the results in a couple days.

I'm a FTM and I have mine tomorrow morning, as well. My doctor said not to eat anything after midnight tonight. I go in at 8 in the morning, and from what I can gather from my friends who have had the test before, I have 5 minutes to drink the sugary drink, I wait an hour, they draw blood. My doctor's office goes by the "no news is good news" policy, which I hate, so I'll probably call Monday to check my results. My doctor also said to avoid eating too many carbs tonight, but that's all the information he gave me about what I should/shouldn't eat. Thanks for posting this!
Definitely ask your OB for instructions as I've noticed OB's vary on how they do their glucose tests.
For mine, I was told to eat normally and then show up. I drank the drink (which actually wasn't bad and just tasted like fruit punch) and was told no food or water until after I got my blood drawn. Wasn't so bad, but I'd recommend charging your phone before going. Passing the time with Angry Birds helps.

Mine's at 9:30 tomorrow morning. Good luck with yours!
That's it. It's seriously no big deal, and the drink isn't even all that nasty. It reminds me of really cheap sugary Sunkist.
My OB schedules the GTT on a regular checkup day. I go to the lab and pee in a cup, get the first blood draw, then drink the drink. Then I go on to my checkup. By the time the checkup is over, it's usually time for the second blood draw. Then it's over and I grab a good lunch on my way home.
If your OB allows you to eat breakfast that morning, it's even easier because you're not shocking your system with a jolt of sugar.

I'm a FTM and am going Tuesday. My doctor said to eat a normal breakfast (just nothing super sweet like pancakes with syrup). They don't do the baseline draw, I drink the drink on the way to my appt and then they'll test me at the hour mark of when I finished.
Pretty much what PPs said. I also hada baseline blood draw, drank the orange stuff (within some mad time limit), and waited an hour for the lasr blood draw.
The one hour wasn't really a big deal for me. There was just the issue of how to pass the time, so be prepared for that.
Just came back from mine. No baseline, I was told I could eat and drink normally, drank the drink within 5 min (actually thought it was better than my last pregnancy two years ago), waited an hour (they said I could eat and drink during the hour but nothing too sugary), then blood draw.
Could not get any cell reception in the lab, their wifi wasn't working, and my kindle was dead... So that kinda sucked.
The drink was so much less awful than I had anticipated. I was afraid I'd have to gag it down, but while it wasn't something I'd drink for fun, it really wasn't bad. And it was only about the size of a small coffee cup about 3/4 full, so not even that much to drink. I had my regular OB appt in the hour I was waiting, so it really wasn't even that boring in between the drink and the blood draw. Guess I should go on the website to check my results...
