Rocking to Sleep

Do you still rock your LO to sleep or do you think they are too old?

Re: Rocking to Sleep

  • I don't rock her, but she lays on me to fall asleep. No, I don't think they're too old to be rocked to sleep. Sometimes I wish she would fall asleep on her own, but I also cherish the time with her.

  • I haven't been able to rock her to sleep since she was 7 mo old.

I've never rocked her to sleep. She used to fall asleep breast feeding/during her night time bottle and I would put her down asleep and then when we sleep trained at about 7 months we started putting to bed wide awake. I think if rocking to sleep still works for you then keep doing it, I don't think there is an age where kids all of a sudden become to old.

Eta: we rock in her chair while we read bedtime stories and say our prayers, but she's awake when she goes into the crib.

  • I still rock her for a bedtime song and a few minutes of quietness if she lets me. She hasn't actually fallen asleep while I rocked in a while.

  • I was never able to rock S to sleep (except the first month or so), she just wouldn't go for it, but she was a big fan of nursing to sleep. Then that stopped working so we sleep trained, and haven't looked back since.

That being said, I don't think there is a set age of when they are 'too old'. Do what works for you and your kid. If you are both still happy with the rocking to sleep, and it is working well, I say keep at it. And when you stop being happy with the arrangement, or it stops working for you/LO/your family, then make a change.

  • Yep, we rock here. She usually doesn't fall asleep while rocking, but when she does, I don't mind :)

  • We read then do a few minutes of cuddles and rocking. If she wakes up in the motn then we rotate who rocks her. We rotate nights putting her down then we rotate wake ups.

  • He only falls asleep in my arms once in a great while and I cherish it. I would probably do it every night if he would go for it:)

  • I thought this was in reference to rocking the baby to sleep. I don't do that but we do rock for a few minutes before nap and bedtime. She just doesn't fall asleep to me rocking.
  • I don't rock to sleep, I think she is too old for that. I want her to be able to fall asleep without it. When I noticed her relying on nursing or rocking to sleep, I started to break the habits. She goes down awake, but she still has a pacifier in her crib, so one bad habit or another...

  • I'm a never-rocked-to-sleep-er. I think it's important they learn to fall asleep on their own.

  • We don't rock him, he just sits/cuddles one of us until he falls asleep.

  • Sometimes they will rock at school but success rate is less than 50%.

  • I sometimes do. She good at letting me know what she wants. Sometimes she points at the chair and says "rock" and other times she's points at the crib and says "night night". She's about 50/50.

The boys I rocked until they went into big kid beds. It wasn't a hard transition and I wasn't still rocking them at 5yrz old.

I'm a believer in letting babies be babies. They will put themselves to bed the rest of their life. If they want rocked now, I'm cool with it. Someday (it's happened already with the boys) they push you away.

  • We rock T to sleep almost every night.  He's getting to a point or size where he's not really comfortable.  He has put himself to sleep a couple of times.  Last night for example because he couldn't get comfortable with me or DH holding him.  I know it won't last forever and at one point he won't want it anymore.  So as long as he'll let me I'll keep doing it.

  • B likes to snuggle in at night after reading books. Sometimes he goes to bed almost a sleep, other times he's wide awake. I usually rock or sway with him by his crib and he lets me know when he's done or he falls asleep. It's probably my favorite time of day with him.

  • We rock for about 5 minutes.  If he falls asleep on us then great.  If not, we put down awake.

When he's sick he likes to be rocked to sleep and we oblige :)

  • We rock, sing a song or read a book right before bed. I'll hold and rock her anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes, depending on both of us. Then I lay her in the crib, and she's always awake. With Kate, when she hit about 8 months old being in our arms seemed to stimulate her more than relax her, so we choose to sleep train then.
