Need idea's for Adoption get together for a relative

A relative of mine has had their little girl now for a little over a year (she was 8 months when they got her) and finally the court has set a date to make her legally part of the family. I always told her that when her and her DH finally adopt that I would throw a party/get together. She just told me this week that they go to court on Friday. So now I'm trying to plan a sort of get together for just close family which is now turning into a short evening of some champagne, snacks and cake during the week since no one has time the next few weekends (and I'm most certainly not going to be planning anything after the first weekend in March!). I was wondering if any of you have any idea's what I could do to make this a bit more special than just sitting around eating cake. We'll be probably about 13 - 15 people in all. Your help is greatly appreciated!!!

    I like the children's book idea! They pretty much have everything they need AND more since she's been living with them for the last year, plus showers here are not really known. I think it's a great personal touch though with a written note in a book, plus their daughter loves books! Thanks!

    I love the book idea. In addition, maybe ask guests to bring a picture of their branch of the family and fill a family photo album for the little girl, including a picture of her with her adoptive family on the first page. Then maybe take a big group photo at the party for her.

    I've thrown and attended one of these before. They are way more fun cause the kid is there and the family is just glowing!
    We made a photo book of all attendees holding the baby for a keepsake. The mom loved it!

    And if you have time... Make a shutterfly ABC book and each page is family related. A is for aunt Betsy, b is for brother jack... Etc.

    The one I attended was along the lines of a coed shower. We were told to bring baby hygiene items, books, and a favorite photo of us and the couple. This "baby" was 20 months old at this point...

    I agree with the book idea--very cute. Have you searched on Pinterest? I bet they have some really cool ideas, as I can't imagine an adoption party being something no one has ever done before.

    Not to be a downer, but I'd be a little hesitant about the book idea.  It's a sweet idea--assuming everyone gets different books. But what happens when three people get Goodnight Moon and they've all been written in?

    I've always preferred the idea of one person getting a book for everyone to sign.  A family favourite or even something about adoption might be a good idea in this case.

    How sweet of you to celebrate their adoption!  Love the book idea, and I wouldn't worry about 3 copies of a specific book or more...

    When I adopted my son who was my stepson prior, we had a family celebration. We didn't need anything since we had had custody of him for over 2 years and he was 4.5 at the time. We made it a special day about us becoming one big family. There were pictures with all his uncles an grandparents. People brought small gifts for him to open. I really like the book idea and or the family photos type thing.

    I apologize that I'm just now getting to this, I don't like posting on old threads I've just been rather distracted. Friday morning we found out a very dear and close friend has 3 - 9 months left to live so Friday was mostly spent crying and getting myself prepared for Saturday, then Saturday was my maternity photo shoot and then there was a surprise baby shower for me. We then spent the night at my in-laws and thus was without internet. So I don't want you guys to think I forgot to send my appreciation for the input! I really do appreciate it! 

    @PerkyErky, sounds like you guys made it something really special! I'm planning on making it a day with pretty much just family being together. I also thought the few that are invited could bring presents for their DD (stuff that 2 year old's like). They don't really need anything for her since she's been living with them anyways for a year so I don't really need a baby shower. Another cousin offered to help me out and we're planning now on doing lot's of pictures on that day. We are also going to buy a photo frame with matting and that everyone present get's to write a special note for the little girl on it. Afterwards we'll put the pictures in there and she will have a nice memory she can hang on her wall.

    Once again thank you all for the idea's!

    I'm so sorry about your friend. That must have been an emotional roller coaster of a weekend. I love the matted frame idea.

    My SIL did the book idea and it was super cute. They had stickers made that said their LO's name and date. It was adorable!
