Carbon monoxide

edited February 2014 in Stay at Home Moms
Last night, our carbon monoxide alarms went off. I grabbed DD and we got in the car and DH parked on the street but we had just gotten a snow storm and nothing was plowed or shoveled so we couldn't even go anywhere, we were just stuck parked on the street. I wrapped DD in a bunch of blankets I keep in the car for her, but she has croup and it was freezing cold and (at the time) I was really panicking about having her in the cold in the middle of the night.

Anyway, DH called the police and the police and fire departments came and they said they were able to detect it in the whole house but it was getting the highest readings in DD's room. They had on masks when they went in and they were going everywhere, digging in closets and all the rooms, the garage, but they said they couldn't find the source. They aired out the whole house and eventually (hours later) said it was safe to go back in because it didn't come back after they aired it out but they said to keep the alarms plugged in and call back and immediately evacuate if they go off again.

It was the middle of the night (2 am) and we were all sleeping. I'm so glad I insisted DH go out and get the alarms now. And in the baby's room... I'm really sick to my stomach. DH had to go to work today but we are going to hire an inspector or something to come look at everything and figure out what it was.

So, please, make sure you all have working carbon monoxide detectors in your house!!

Re: Carbon monoxide

  • How scary!  I am so sorry that happened to you.  Thank you for the reminder, it has been on our list of things to do.

  • Wow, thank goodness for the alarm! One thing to keep in mind is to make sure all vents from the furnace, gas fireplace, etc. are clear of snow, I think that can sometimes cause problems.

  • How scary!! A few of our fire alarms have carbon monoxide detectors in them too. Having them go off is always one of my fears, though!

  • Thanks everyone. I am so glad we got them and they worked. @Hav we have electric heat, we do have a wood burning fire place but we weren't using it at the time. DH said they were really surprised when he told them we didn't have gas. But that just makes me even more nervous, if we had gas at least we'd know where it came from!

Do you have a gas range or dryer? Or you might want to have your water heater inspected. The heater was the first thing I thought of too.
No, we don't have any gas appliances. We'll definitely have someone look at the water heater and everything else. Maybe the snow covered up a vent or something? I don't know. I'm hoping we can get an inspector to give us an answer because not knowing is scary!

So scary! What's beneath her room?!
The dining room. The garage is under our room so if anything I thought it would be in there.

  • So glad all is okay!!
  • How scary! Thank goodness you are all okay!

We have several carbon monoxide detectors throughout our home and this just reminded me that we need to test them soon as it's been awhile.

how scary. I don't have any because we don't have any gas or oil appliances. electric heat, hot water, oven, dryer etc. no attached garage etc. do you think we need them?
You may want to check your state laws. In NY you are required to have one by law, regardless of what you own.  We passed a law in 2009, and many other states have a law too.   I would get one regardless, I just feel it's something every house should have.

Roses, that is SOOOOOOOO scary. I'm so glad everyone was safe and it went off in time, hopefully it never happens again ((hugs))
