Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Moving baby from rock n play to crib

DS has slept in his rock n play since he was a month old because of his reflux.

His reflux is now much better so we've decided it is time to move him into his crib.
However, right now he thinks his crib is a playground, not a sleeping place.
He rolls all around and within 10-15 minutes, he's crying.
If I put him in it while he's alseep; he will either wake up immediately or within an hour and start screaming. =(

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to make the transition?

Re: Moving baby from rock n play to crib

  • Sorry I don't have any suggestions, but I'm actually right there with you.  DD has been in the Rock N Play since three weeks and is actually starting to not like it.  You can tell she feels confined and has begun rolling over in it, yet the crib is entirely too big.  I would love to know if anyone has had a sucessful transition as well.  Good luck to you!

  • Right now my DD sleeps in her PnP in our room but I went through this with my DS.  My DS slept in our room in his PnP until 8 months old while I was BFing and then we slowly transitioned him into his crib.

I started slowly with just putting him in his crib for naps during the day to get him used to it and he would still sleep in his PnP at night.  I would rock him to sleep and then put him in his crib for a nap.  The first few times he cried when he woke up I think because he was in an unfamiliar place.  After about 4-5 days, he wasn't crying anymore when he woke up so then I started putting him in his crib for naps without rocking him to sleep.  He would play for a little bit but eventually he would fall asleep.  After about a week of this, he would fall asleep pretty quickly for his naps and then I started putting him in there at night too and he didn't have any problems.  The whole transition took about two weeks.

  • We had to do this a month or so ago.  Our biggest issue was he would flail his arms and wake up.  It's a huge space difference from his rock and play.  We ended up putting a soft, thick blanket in under the sheet (so he can't pull it up and suffocate) and it really helped.  It provided a little more comfort than the rigid mattress, but not so much it was a danger.  It's also warmer.  DS was sleeping like a pro in no time.  I know it was probably a no-no to some people, but it's what worked for us.

  • Sorry no advice here. I love having my son in our room, I'm not ready for the crib.

Just HAD to tell you that your son is beautiful!

  • I transitioned to a bassinet from the RnP today, then I plan to move her to the crib.  I figure once she gets used to lying flat in a small space then she'll be more able to handle lying flat in a big space.  One change at a time.

  • We're dealing with the same thing... The RNP was amazing, but it's hard to get him adjusted to the flat surface. We put a pillow under the mattress so it has a little incline for acid relfux. We tried putting him in there for naps, but he went from taking 2-3 hour naps to 30 minutes. It's been hard.... Hopefully he'll get there soon. Good luck!
  • We're in the same boat. RnP is amazing and she love it. But the issue is that she is only able to sleep in her RnP or car seat and when she's on a flat surface she wakes herself up after about 30 mins.

Thanks for the idea about the blankets under she sheet. She's only 3 months so she's not rolling over all the time yet (it's hit or miss right now) so that might help us.
  • So glad you posted this. I'm getting ready to do the same thing and was looking for some advice. I plan on going to the bassinet for naps first in hopes of getting her familiar with the flat surface. I also bought a wedge to put under the sheet in the crib just in case. She loves to be snuggled in her swing and RnP so I know it's going to be tough :-( good luck!!!
  • We had the same issue. My son slept great in the RNP. Then wouldn't last 10 minutes in the crib at night would just play then scream. His arms would always startle him. Finally gave in a got the Sleepsuit. The first night we used it he slept 8 hours!! He loves his little suit!!
  • This is what we did.  It worked for DS but every kid is different so no promises, no guarantees.

We put him in the crib for several weeks to play to get used to it.  Then we started putting him down for one nap a day.  If he woke up we picked him up and soothed him and let him sleep somewhere else.  We don't CIO.

Once he was napping successfully in the crib we started putting him down in the crib at night.  At first I had to keep soothing him back down, and when that would no longer work I'd just put him back in the RnP for the rest of the night (I like to sleep and there was no way I was staying up all night soothing him). After a week and a half of that he STTN in his crib and has been doing that for the past 2 1/2 weeks.  He did STTN before we started this transition, though.

For us, it was a real gradual transition.  Oh - and he sleeps in a fleece footed PJ and Halo sleepsack.  We also use a white noise machine.  Good luck!
  • My LO slept in the RNP for the first five weeks in our room. We then placed the RNP in the nursery so she could get use to the room. After a week of that, we then used the miracle blanket to swaddle. It is really a miracle. She had no problem with the transitioning from RNP to crib. She is a little over 3 months now, and as long as she is swaddled tightly, I can lay her in the crib drowsy and she will sleep about 6 hours before her next feed. It just takes time. Good luck!
  • Going through the same thing. I almost had LO in the crib full time - got him to sleep through the night once in it - then he started the 3 month growth spurt and then got sick so he's been back in the RnP for about a week. What worked for us was using a Halo sleep sack swaddler, but I leave the arms unswaddled. Having the swaddle wrapped around his torso seemed to make him feel cozier. I put the crib mattress at a slight incline. Also I spent an entire weekend making him take his naps in the crib. After that every night I'd put him to sleep in the crib. Some nights he'd make it an hour, some nights he'd make it halfway through before waking up. At that MOTN feeding I usually put him back in the RnP so I could get some sleep.

Now I've gotta get his nighttime sleep back on track and then I'm back to transitioning into the crib. FWIW my LO fought it when we first started the transition and really looked extra cozy in his RnP. Now though, he seems like he wants to stretch out, so the transition may be smoother this time. So if it doesn't work well this week, maybe hold off a week or two and try again. GL!

  • I'm waiting until my LO outgrows the RNP. I'm relishing my sleep for as long as I can :)
