I did not use a toddler rail with the girls. I put them in the crib converted to toddler bed (which had it pretty close to the ground) and put couch cushions on the floor for the first week or so so that if they fell out of bed they'd have a soft landing. Neither fell out, so we removed the cushions.
We moved DD2 to the bottom twin bunk without a rail. It's pretty high and she's fallen out once. I have a papasan cushion we weren't using, so we put it under her, so she wasn't hurt at all. She was just over two.
Ok because we moved DD tonight into a full size bed and the rails are ridiculously crappy and DH almost broke them out of frustration yelling that everything is made like garage. So I took them off and put a pillow down. She hasn't moved from the center of the bed since 8... We have pillows on the floor and carpeting. Wish us luck.
