Finger foods

Can we talk about finger foods? I've been giving DD large pieces of soft foods to self feed (banana, bread, strawberries etc) and she is getting efficient at picking up the small leftover pieces with a pincer grip. Does this mean I can start giving her small pieces of not as soft food? I'm not sure what the next step is here.... I know I've read something about giving "Cheerios" sized pieces of food, can I start doing that with different foods? FWIW she sometimes chews the soft food I give her, but sometimes she still tries to swallow large pieces whole.

  • We tried giving her corn nibblets tonight and she got a couple of them in her mouth. Cheese sticks is a good idea.

  • I'm so glad to see this post! My baby isn't a huge fan of purées so I've been giving her small chunks of mashable or soft food. I'm not sure when to move to harder stuff but I assume once she has some teeth and has mastered the soft foods. She chews pretty well, and rarely gags. We have done a ton of stuff... Cooked peas, cooked carrot squares, toast, pulled pork (in small pieces), shredded chicken, deli turkey in small pieces, mashed potatoes (she picks them up in her fingers haha), angel hair pasta, sautéed pepper slices, cooked green beans, etc.... She is loving food.

  • Just go with your gut and follow their lead.  If you wait for them to have the teeth for chewing (vs those fucking sharp little biting ones lol), you'll be waiting a looong time lol

  • Isn't cheese pieces too hard for them to eat? I've given shredded cheese but cheese sticks sounds like a choking hazard. But I am kinda overly scared of her choking so don't ask me.

Do your LOs use a pincher grasp to pick up food? My LO is just now occasionally using a pincher grasp but more often has difficulty picking up little things. Do I just keep trying?
  • I was also curious about this. We went put for Mexican food the other night and I gave LO a tortilla to chew on every time he bit off a little piece he would gag. Does his mean he's just not ready?

Yeah, it might mean he isn't ready. Or you could put something on it (avocado, hummus...) to soften it

  • @jessicaks she did choke a bit a first, but now has no trouble. Since we partially BLW the choking didn't freak me out.
This.  Cheese sticks are actually LO's favorite!  We do full on BLW, and still do deal with some gagging every once in a while, but LO just soldiers on through it and doesn't mind, so I try hard to not mind either!

OP - I don't think you have to cut things up into little pieces.  Especially if your LO is doing well with big pieces of things.  I'd think the pincer grip comes in handy once they've eaten their food down to smaller than their fist.  Of course, I'm all about making this as easy as possible for me in terms of food prep ;-)

  • haha,^^^ that's^^^ awesome.
  • I just tried puffs for the first time tonight. Once he got one in his mouth, he started choking. Had to do some back blows until he got it out and then threw up. Definitely sticking with purees

DD has had bread many times, but she also had issues with tortilla. So far she does better with large pieces of soft foods. I would suggest bread (with a spread if you like) or "spears" of banana or cooked-until-mushy cauliflower or broccoli. I wouldn't take the tortilla as a sign he isn't ready.

  • Baby A just is just figuring out the pincer grip, and will not eat purees anymore. This is concentration personified.
