Botox?

Don't jump on me, I don't do it. I was just wondering if anyone has while pregnant. I can't find a lot of info on it because there hasn't been any studies regarding it's safety in use while pregnant. As far as I know it doesn't get into your blood stream, and just stays in the muscle that it is injected into. There has to be someone on this board who has either done it or asked their dr about it, I would think. #firstworldproblems

Re: Botox?

  • Did you ask your doctor? That would probably be helpful.

  • Not recommended when pregnant becuase it hasn't been studied in pregnant women. But boy, I miss Botox. That shit rocks my world, and I'll gladly be getting it after pregnancy.

  • I love Botox! Unfortunately/Fortunately I am fat enough I don't REALLY need it right now.

As PP said, there are no studies on this. For that reason I won't do it. However, I had it right before my wedding. This is a honeymoon baby, and my Dr had absolutely no concern for LO. So I do think (and it is just a thought, nothing to back it up ) if it is your system when you conceive, would it matter when you get it?? Either way, not studied yet.

For the record, the last day in my BF career, I will 100% be getting shot up before I even cover up my boob:)

  • Another thing I was thinking about is, we know that drinking during pregnancy can cause birth defects but an occasional glass of wine is ok. Flu shots supposedly have all kinds of harmful chemicals, including mercury which we're supposed to avoid, but we're told to get them. I get ALL of the vaccines pumped into my body. I have to take rx medications. I have a pregnant friend who had dislocated her shoulder and her dr prescribed hydrocodone, a class c med (like Botox). I'm not opposed to using Botox but I can hold off for as long as I'm pregnant or breast feeding, but deep down in my head I just don't think it's any less safe then any of the aforementioned. Good thing I've gained so much weight that I don't seem to need it!

    A) nobody "needs" botox
    B) there are medical benefits to getting vaccines and medications (and, regardless, there is more mercury in a can of tuna and more formaldehyde in the average pear than there is in a flu shot) and those are always, always, ALWAYS weighed against the risks to the pregnancy/fetus/woman when they are prescribed.

ergo C) why in the world would you even consider those things comparable?

I mean "needs" as "have a use for" I guess. I agree with what you are saying, and I trust that medical professionals know 100% more than I do on all of these subjects. I do follow doctors orders and if he tells me something is safe I'm going to believe that over a Facebook meme about mercury in flu shots. They are all only comparable because I'm just an average layperson who knows very little about the contents of vaccines and chemicals in my foods and the length of studies done on pregnant women who take the same epilepsy medication that I do. They are comparable because not one of them is 100% safe, just almost or safe enough. Sometimes Botox is used for non cosmetic purposes, you don't think it's treated as potentially harmful and also weighed against the risks to the pregnancy/mother/fetus when prescribed? It's not like I'm saying, "Boo hoo, I need my Botox to feel pretty again!" I'm just starting a conversation about something I suddenly became curious about.

Actually, while considered "off label" there are many people who use botox for medical benefits.  Cervical dystonia is an example of a disorder that is practically fixed with the use of botox, and usually administered during pregnancy notwithstanding its category C classification.  Botox has been shown to help with excessive sweating, migraines, tension headaches, dystonia, TMJ etc.  And its not just "an excuse to get rid of wrinkles" as the muscles they inject it into aren't the same muscles they target for wrinkle reduction.

I actually knew that and I kicked myself for not putting it in my response. The responses to the thread were obviously referring to cosmetic uses for botox (ie, the I'm glad I'm too plump for botox right now) and I felt that the medical benefits of botox would fall under my point B), that if the medical benefits warranted using it, then the potential side effects would be weighed against them and it would either be prescribed or not.

    Cosmetic botox? No.

  • Honestly, even if my dr were to tell me that it was safe I still wouldn't feel comfortable doing it. I can't even drive behind a bus without thinking that I just handed my baby over a birth defect or took 10 years off her life. But while NOT pregnant? That's a different story. I work in television, I have no issue with a couple of pokes in my forehead. I really hope I'm not offending anyone, I don't mean to be insensitive to people who get Botox for medical reasons. I have a friend who uses it for her back and it helps her a lot, as I'm sure it does for many of its uses.

I used to work with the guy who developed botox.  He was using it to treat strabismus (crossed eyes).  He never made any money off of it though because he wasn't interested in it for cosmetic purposes and sold the rights to another company.  Just a fun fact!
Idoit.  Jk, jk.  That is very cool you knew him.  Smart people.

  • None of my doctors would prescribe me class C medications, I had to change my nasal spray when I was TTC.

  • It isn't recommended while pregnant. I plan to go back to my twice yearly Botox ritual after baby is finished breastfeeding.
  • I'm not sure what your face looks like but I'm sure it looks great no matter what. No need to apologize, I have a feeling that you are much younger than I. I'm surely much wrinklier.

  • Alcohol consumption while pregnant and Botox are NOT comparable. In any way. Ever.

    Edit - What is happening

Right? All of the comparisons are confusing me. I also don't understand the bus thing?

  • Lol, the fumes. From the bus. Maybe it's just me, I just feel like they're not safe to breath. What is happening? I think I've made myself a huge target of ridicule! Oops.

  • My dr said no during pregnancy and active nursing. Just to be safe.
Luckily I had some right before I got pregnant! Plus with all the extra fluid and blood gain, I have not needed it.
  • Maybe it's because I'm 27 and I still have great skin but I just don't understand the cosmetic use of Botox. It's not natural (obviously) and I feel like ican always tell when someone uses it because their skin just looks plastic. Like I said, I'm young and probably ignorant to the woe of aging skin but what's wrong with taking good care of your skin and aging gracefully?

This may also stem from my very anti cosmetic surgery/putting chemicals in my body stance. So...sorry if I offend anyone?

I'm 30 and still consider myself to be pretty young, but we all age differently. And we all have different preferences on what we like to do with our bodies. In all, I like it for getting rid of some serious genetic frown lines. It makes me feel nice. And it looks natural, not plastic. If it looks plastic you're either having it done too often or going to the wrong person.

Never underestimate the unfairness of genetics. It's easy to say "age gracefully" when one has great skin. Kinda like stretchmarks... Some things aren't preventable and some people get them bad, some people don't. That being said I haven't done Botox, maybe I will one day... But as @sandbridge1030 had said above, it shouldn't look fake if its well done. And it's not permanent so if it was a little too much, 6 months later, clean slate :) not like a facelift!!

This. Law school gave me serious forehead wrinkles. I started getting a few injections in my forehead when I was 25!!!!

    Not like a facelift!!

TOTALLY. Even those "thread lifts" that're supposed to be less invasive and more natural looking... To me, anyone that's had one looks like they're trying to look like a cat, or that they're sitting permanently in front of a high speed wind machine cause their face is all flat and stretched out. There's a lady that works at my local Sams Club as the receipt checker on the way out, and it's obvious she's had one by the flat, wide, perma-duckface she's got. *shudders*

And FTR I'm 35 and would never dream of injecting that botulism in my face. I don't want to have the same expressionless look for every emotion, like the Kardashians' mother. Then again, I guess my family is in the "good skin" camp; what with my 82 year old grandmother looking like she's still in her late 60s and all.
