Infant Car seats and/or bases

Do you get extras for grandparents/dads car to be used extremely lightly or just strap in your infant car seat with the seat belt? I was looking and the B-safe base is 80 dollars just in itself... Crazy!

Just wondering what most people do, extra bases, extra car seats or just seat belt strapping!

Re: Infant Car seats and/or bases

  • Will you be there to install with seat belt each use?  If not, can the grandparents be trusted to install it snugly and properly with the seatbelt each use?  If not then I would pay for the base and leave it in the car so the grandparents can easily secure the seat each use.

If they can be trusted to install it properly and are not using it often I would just use the seat belt...it is easy enough to do, assuming the seat belts lock in the car to be used.

  • Its iffy really. Considered just having them go ahead and get a convertible as well. It wont be that often. Maybe when say grama is off work that day, baby is sick and I dont have to miss work. Things like that.

  • We had the one base that came with the seat for thr first 8 months. She never rode with Grandma because Grandma always came to us under those circumstances. Then LO started day care & having the base there made it a lot easier so bought a second base. Anywhere LO goes by car is with her infant seat. Have used the seat a few times without the base & it isn't that hard however agree with PP about deciding based on of they'd be able to correctly install it each time.

You can always buy another base later on, if/when the need arises.

  • Maybe you can just take the base out of your car and install it into theirs when they will be watching your child?

Sometimes that would work but im thinking for those random days I need her picked up from dad care. I think well let them decide and they can spend their money. But I may just recommend a decent convertible since really they wont have her that much then they will already have one when she absolutely needs a convertible.

A convertible is a good idea too.  That way they don't have to mess around.

  • We have a base in each of our cars but not in grandparents.  If grandparents are going to be providing regular transportation, then yes, I think it's worth it.  If not, seat belt is fine.  Just make sure that you read your instruction manual and that grandparents understand proper installation.  Oh and this is also something to remember for airplane travel.  Don't take the base... just take your stroller/infant seat and push it straight to the gate!  When you get to your destination, use the seatbelt to secure the seat in the rental car/taxi.  The base is not required for most models- it's just an added convenience.

  • we just had 1 base for my car. when we took DH's car, we used the seatbelt to install. DD never travelled in my parents car unless we installed the seat ourselves. They live in the next city, so we knew they'd never just drop by to pick her up or whatever.

I think you have to do what works best in your situation!

  • We had the b safe and found it easy to install baseless. We only needed to do it once or twice a week and decided that if it became too difficult we would rather put the money towards a convertible and that would be installed in his car.

I say skip the extra base unless it is going to be used every day.

  • we had one seat and 2 bases. The majority of the time they were in my car and DH's. The bases were easy enough to install (we have newer cars with prety easy latch systems). We just moved the base to someone elses car if we needed to.

  • I found the seatbelt instal very easy on our graco car seat and never thought twice about handing it off to the grandparents to use (after I showed them once how to do it).
