One glass of wine is okay right?

I'm going out for dinner tonight and really want a glass of white sangria or Riesling. I had a glass last Saturday at a wedding that my husband helped me finish. So it's okay if I have one glass of wine? Does it matter what kind?

Re: One glass of wine is okay right?

  • Drink it and enjoy.  Although I believe red is better than white...

  • Thank you! I was thinking red would probably be better but I don't like red and I don't think red sangria counts unless they make it themselves which I'm not sure if they do.

I was under the impression that you should not drink even a glass until after your first trimester. One glass during second and third is ok, but should be avoided before that. I also am not a doctor.
This is pretty much what I've heard.

Personally I wouldn't right now, especially since you already had some last weekend.

  • I am not going to weigh in here because I think that the decision to drink or not is one you have to make yourself and be what you are comfortable with. However this is a very interesting new study.

  • My understanding was also that it should be avoided during the first trimester especially and that different women will react differently, even to just one glass. And that there's a lot of conflicting info out there because doctors still aren't really sure what amount is safe and when. My personal decision, as a non-doctor, is not to risk it, but like I said - personal decision.

  • I agree that it's a personal decision. The research on drinking minor amounts of alcohol during pregnancy are inconclusive, which is why doctor's generally advise you to stay away from it. However, there are numerous people I have met who didn't find out they were pregnant until their 2nd trimester, drank like a fish up until they found out, and had a healthy baby. Bottom-line, you have to do what you feel comfortable with.

  • I definitely wouldn't do sangria, as it commonly has brandy added to it. I'm personally waiting until after the 1st trimester and even then, I think weekly might be overdoing it.

  • I've also been told no alcohol during your 1st tri. I personally would not risk it....if something went wrong I would blame myself.

  • I used to work for a Dr. that did OB too and his wife was just preggo. We went out with them a few times while she was pregs and both times she enjoyed a glass of wine. I feel that if it was bad for you he definitely would have advised her not to do it.
    Hope this helps!

  • I planned a wine and chocolate pairing with some of my girlfriends this Friday. ( planned this before I knew I was pregnant) and I've been debating what to do because most if them don't know and we won't be telling them for a while. I feel like tasting a few won't hurt anything but I simply don't think I could live with myself if something happened. There will always be studies that say it's ok and some that say no, same with caffeine.

No judging here, I just personally don't think I will be!

  • I personally would not, but I do not think it is advised for the first trimester. Too many important organs are forming in the first tri. Some obs will say a glass every now and then is fine in the third tri. Like I said personally I am not comfortable with it. If any thing were to go wrong or happen and I did drink I would automatically think it was the drinking and live with guilt for ever after. Some women are comfortable with drinking though.

Maybe you can taste a few of them and then have a bottle of n/a that you can sneakily fill your glass with. Good luck! You'll have to post how it goes

  • It's a personal choice and I have heard a small amount of red wine is ok. But I personally wouldn't drink at all during pregnancy
  • On the "is it safe" section here on the bump it says that you are fine. It should be okay unless you are already a high risk. Two a day can lead to fetal alcohol syndrome so don't get ahead of yourself. I personally am not drinking, but I've never been much of a drinker and I hate wine. I don't feel as I AM missing out on anything because I AM a weirdo who thinks the taste of alcohol in any form tastes like sh*t!

  • I've been stealing sips from DH's glass once in awhile, just to get a taste.  In the 2nd and 3rd trimester I think I will have a small glass on special occasions.  When I was 6 months pregnant with DD we went to the Italian regime where prosecco is made and I had a glass or two and none of the waiters even batted an eye! But I agree with pp that its all about what you feel comfortable with. If it will worry you, probably not worth it anyway.

  • I went to a L'Bri party Monday night and I had a very small amount of red. My neighbor knows I'm pregnant, so when I asked for a tiny bit, I got a tiny bit :)

I think a small amount here and there is fine. That's all the wine I've had since I found out I'm pregnant, and I don't plan on having more anytime soon. I have a friend who was newly pregnant and still had sushi and wine when we all went out as a group. She's a paleo mom and I know she did a lot of research. It's not something id feel comfortable with, but she did.

For the time being, I'll just enjoy a glass of fre wine here and there and dream of real wine. :)
