Let's talk about cribs!

Ok, so I just started registering for stuff. So far, so good, until I came across all of the different types and brands of cribs. I thought I would go with the davinci 4 in 1 but people have been complaining about the finish of the crib. Have any of you ladies done any research into cribs? If so, what are you getting?

We are using Ikea cribs. What is the complaint about the finish?

ETA: We wanted them to match for the nursery but once they outgrow their toddler beds they are either getting moved into bunk beds (if both boys or both girls) or into separate rooms (if boy/girl) so we didn't see a benefit to getting something that would convert totally into a full size bed.

  • We are getting the Munire set below.  I would suggest looking at the cribs in person to see if you like them and referencing the Baby Bargains book.  BB gives a pretty thorough breakdown of each manufacturer and what woods they use (i.e., some might be softer and more prone to scratches/nicks).

  • We have a Graco Stanton convertible crib. We probably won't need to convert it, though, since we are keeping the twin bed that is currently in LO's room.

  • We are using the same crib we did we our son. Spot on Square's Eicho Crib. I love it. Here's a picture of the nursery before my son was born in Jan '11.

  • For DD #1, we had the Davinci Kalani in Ebony.  It is a soft wood so there some scuffs, but overall it still looks good.  For DD#2, we are going with the AFG Athena Nadia crib in White.

  • Umm what the heck is this Baby Bargains book that you ladies speak of? I feel like its the secret to all healthy and good baby things and I was NOT let in on the secret? Someone cure me of my ignorance? Please? :)
  • @Leo2010 its Baby Bargains by Denies and Alan Fields. I got mine at Barnes & Noble but have seen it at Buy Buy Baby and I think you can normally get it used on Amazon too but new it was only like $15. Its really organized, has reviews on car seats, cribs/furniture, and most baby gear. Super helpful! They have a website too but I've not looked at that yet.

We are liking this : the Baby Mod Modelo...in gray. Except not with this ugly bedding!!
  • I went inexpensive. I didn't have the confidence that I would use this piece of furniture for years to come. Most of my friends rationalized their 2k worth of nursery furniture saying it'd be used for years and years..

We went with the Olivia Mod Crib off of Walmart.com

DD has chewed on the crib and its gotten a nick or two from shuffling around the nursery. Since it was around $250..I haven't stressed to much.

  • We are getting a Graco crib from Target.  It's rated as "good" in the baby bargains book and for $150, it's a steal.  I think there were some complaints that it scratched easily, but DH knows how to patch furniture if it gets bad.

Since DD is still in her crib, we're need to purchase another. I was eyeing the Graco Lauren..just an FYI on Walmart.com there's a deal with some of the Gracos...a free mattress comes with the purchase of the crib
  • We have a Graco Lauren we got in 2011 for DD. It has some marks from our move but is still in really good condition. We got it as part of a Wal mart deal with a free mattress. The mattress isn't that great IMO but it does the job. We'll be buying another one when we separate the twins to their own cribs.

  • We haven't purchased a crib yet, and with DS it took us a long time to really find the one we felt was perfect for him. He was a little over 5 months before we found a crib for him.

All I know is we are going back to the same furniture store where we bought DS's, it has to be solid wood, and we are going with the convertible crib set again.  DS's goes from the crib to a toddler bed, day bed then full size bed.  If you do decide to go the convertible crib route, I highly recommend purchasing all the extra pieces with the crib. This ensures that your parts will not be discontinued for when you need them in the future.

We have two Davinci Kalanis - in white and honey oak. The finish is fine except for some teeth marks.
  • Another one for the Graco Lauren in white.  Although it's a convertible crib, we most likely won't be using it for anything but a crib, but at only $150 that's not really a concern.
  • On the subject of cribs, what all can be in there besides mattress and a sheet?  No bumper or blankets, right?  Pardon my ignorance, but I don't want to buy/register for a bunch of stuff you aren't supposed to use!

  • We just ordered the Graco Lauren cherry crib from Walmart, with the free mattress.  I figured if we don't like the mattress, it was free and we can get a better one.  My total purchase was $159, very happy with that price.  The crib is just something we didn't want to spend a lot of money on, and this crib has pretty decent reviews.  I think it's going to be delivered Thursday!

  • what you put in there depends on your comfort level.

We did a crib sheet and that was it. Baby was in a pjs and a sleepsack. I didn't feel comfortable with bumpers and thought the mesh ones were ugly and didn't really ever have a need for them. No blankets when they're little. I didn't have any toys ..stuffed animals or the crib toys that light up and make noise and attach to the side. I had a friend whose daughter fell and hit one of those hard. We had a mobile but she started sleeping in the crib around 3 months..I think it got taken out around 7 once she was pulling herself up and could reach it.

At around 13 months we started using a A&A dream blanket in the crib with her and her stuffed lamb.

  • @lizardbreath14 I love that crib! There are no retailers who sell it here in Canada anymore, but I've found one on Craigslist. It looks like I need to get some replacement parts for it, but hopefully that won't be a problem. I'm excited for it!

We haven't purchased it yet, but I liked the look of this one in the store: Child Craft London Euro. Simple, but cute and a good price.
  • I really want the white Jenny Lind. But I am pretty sure my ILs are buying us the crib and they may think the $200 price tag is too much. They tried to buy us a dark crib for $100 because it's such a good deal. I am giving them options on white cribs that range in price. They are weird.

We have the Graco Lauren crib, purchased from Target.  It's held up well with Catherine in it, is easy to adjust the height of the mattress, and looks very nice.  However, when it comes to her crib, if nothing else in the house, she's never tried to climb out, never chewed on it, and rarely if ever jumps around in here.  She falls asleep once she's in it and just sort of lies there yelling for us in the mornings.  How well it would stand up to a more rambunctious baby, I have no idea.

ETA: I just saw the stuff about what to have in the crib.  When she was tiny tiny it was just a crib sheet and the baby.  Once we switched her to a tummy sleeper at 2-3 months,  and it started getting cooler at night, we added a blanket.  It was tucked in on both sides and only went up to her armpits.  Being on her stomach meant it would have been much more difficult for her to pull it over her head/face.  She has always done great with it and now, at 20 months, we're using an IKEA crib-sized duvet and she loves it.

  • Here's ours.  It's the Newcastle made by Lajobi.  Baby Bargains gives them a B+ only because their customer service got a little messed up in the last year.  The cribs get a good rating.

  • I really want this crib but I am worried because there are no reviews online anywhere for this model, and it mentions a drop gate.... which I thought was illegal now?

  • I'm seeing a trend of no brb cribs- DH and I are looking for a white crib and the only one I like so far is from brb. DH is super picky about quality and wants a nicer wood- not pine- and the crib we like is $400. Looking at what you gals have said I feel like we are going in the wrong direction. Our rationale was that this is our first and we are planning to put a few more kids in the crib God willing but now I'm wondering if a $150 or $200 crib could hold up just as well without spending all the extra money. STM + out there- if we are planning on using it for more kids- did/have you found the more expensive cribs last longer or are they a rip off?

Drop sides are illegal, not drop gates, but that picture doesn't look like it has either. Odd. I love our Graco crib.

Okay, so what exactly is a drop gate? lol I thought drop gate and drop side were the same thing.
