Start of thrush or just sore nipple??

So my right nipple has been sore the past two days. It does like a little raw but no blistering or cracking. My right side will tend to get more engorged so LO has a harder time latching sometimes and also has fallen asleep while comfort nursing and done an awesome startle response where she almost tears off my nipple. But I saw another persons post so looked into symptoms and some are the same as thrush. But this isn't the side that leaks and has stayed pretty dry. Also it doesn't hurt while pumping. I am gonna start a vinegar application to it starting today but wanted to ask u ladies who were diagnosed about it. LO has no symptoms or sores in her mouth and my left side is perfectly fine. Also for those undergoing treatment which doc did u go to (primary care, OB, peds diagnosed LO and treated u also)?

ETA: I did just nurse on that side and initial minute is painful but not after that.

  • I laid in bed for 30 minutes last night freaking out that I have thrush. I woke up today with no pain, but I've been peeking in DS's mouth all day to make sure he doesn't have any white patches. I'm following this thread just in case! I have the same questions!

  • I tried the vinegar and do far no effect, just started with it yesterday tho. I took LO to the ped today because her tongue is white and ped said that's not thrush and don't let anyone tell you it is. Then she says oh by the way she has jaundice. I can see it from here but unless you start having issues with her not waking your ok. Anyone hear of that with babies that develop jaundice at 2 weeks old?
  • From what you are describing it sounds like it may be sore from a latch thats not great.  Symptoms of thrush will include bright pink nipples, burning feeling that soesnt go away, white spots that do not wipe off with a wet cloth inside babies mouth or an opal sheen to babies inside cheeks that doesnt go away.  Most of the time if one gets thrush the other will too so if you see no symptoms in baby or your other nipple, thrush would seem less likely to me.  If you are unsure have pedi check - lots of times if baby is diagnosed they can treat mom too.

  • Also if is really thrush and a bad case sometime baby may be more reluctant to nuse bc their mouth doesnt feel good.

  • I have thrush and it hurts to nurse like a mother. My nipples are bright red and they burn and it hurts when anything brushes up against them. It also hurts to pump. There isn't any evidence in the babies mouth, but he has a little diaper rash.

I have been using cream prescribed by my obgyn and rinsing with Vineger after each feed. Also, changing my towel daily and nursing pads as soon as they get wet. I make sure to sterileize anything that has been in the babies mouth and change my shirt as soon as milk touches it.

I'm feeling better 1 week later, but still not close to being back to normal.

Hopefully you don't have thrush :-/
