Update on DD

We saw the GI today. She gained a pound in the last 4 weeks!!! She is now exactly 1 pounds and is officially in the weight chart in the 1%. Her blood test came back normal (previous two had some concerns). The GI ordered duocal which is a powder supplement we're supposed to mix into her food to give her more calories, along with the concentrate formula that helps give her more protein. We still don't have a really clear answer as to why she isn't gaining. We've had observed feeds, weighted feeds, my breast milk tested...even adding food and concentrated formula she's still just a very slow gainer. She typically gains 10-12 oz per 4 weeks so this pound was a huge gain for her. A lot has been ruled l though (mainly CF being the scary one).

  • That is great news!!!  We have had similar struggles and I know how stressful it can be.

  • Oh, that's awesome! I'm glad these past 4 weeks have been a bigger gain - every ounce counts at this age, especially when you're trying to get her to gain.

Do they have any other ideas about what else to test for?

And did you ever end up having any luck a/ a bottle/cup or SNS?
Her GI says some babies are just very slow gainers and sometimes you never find out why. So I'm thinking they'll rule out everything they can and either something will come up or one day she'll just start gaining at a better rate. We totally gave up on the bottle. She gets maybe 1-2 oz a day through the SNS but the tub seriously pisses her off so I have to try and shove the tube in after she's latched. I'm working on getting her to take a sippy

I actually thought of you today. Your DD was determined to just be petite right? Any course of action they took with her?

We did 3.5 months of weekly occupational therapy and frequent weight checks.  They threw around the idea of testing for cystic fibrosis and a few other things but never ended up doing testing. In the end they did decide she was just petite, we considered it a success for her to be in the 1-3%range.  At her one year appointment she jumped up to the 6th percentile and we were shocked.  She didn't even double her birth weight until 1 year.

  • DS1 was FTT and his was mostly reflux that we figured out around 7 months.  However, no matter how much he ate it was never enough to gain the weight the dr's wanted.  He's just a small kid.  And then, after he started gaining weight all the dr would mention was gaining extra "catch up" weight.  He never did.  At 3.5 he's only about 29 lbs but it perfectly healthy.

I'm glad your daughter just seems to be a slow gainer.

That's great she gained so much so quickly. Hope she keeps it up. You're doing a great job! Just thought you should hear those words out loud. Good luck going forward!

Thanks. Most people IRL are still criticizing me for continuing to breast feed and not just switching to formula. It's frustrating trying to convince my mom and MIL that I'm not harming her by giving her breast milk.

  • You are the mom! You know what's best for your baby. I breastfed my son for 13 months & caught crap for that & dd was a slow gainer too & friends kept pushing me to give her formula.
She's now 8 months, still breastfeeding & completely healthy...just petite!
