Belly too big?

Please don't judge this possibly silly question but I'm a bit concerned. It seems that everyone feels free to tell me how huge my belly is. Just now someone at work asked me if my doctor is worried about it. She seemed genuinely concerned. I get the typical asshat comments of "You sure there's only one in there?". I'm 32 weeks and at my last appointment at 28 weeks, my fundus measured 30 weeks I believe. There was and had been no mention of that being a concern and no mention of concern with my weight gain.
I'm sure you may be thinking that if my doctor isn't worried then I shouldn't be. I still can't help but worry. I had a friend who was huge and her doctor wasn't worried and it turns out she had excessive levels of fluid because her LO had tumors that required surgery after birth.

  • I wouldn't worry about it too much, everyone seems to feel that when a woman is pregnant they HAVE to share their opinion/experience with said woman. I've had tons of people tell me that I look so small...um, no I'm measuring right on target according to my doctor.

I think the window of "okay" is 3 or 4 weeks in either direction, but I don't remember. Just tell them that your doctor isn't concerned, but you appreciate them being worried for you. (Or be bitchier that that if you want.)
  • The user and all related content has been deleted.
  • I'm also a FTM, who is paranoid about the size of her belly. But according to my midwife fundal height is NOT the most accurate way to measure a belly. It all depends on who is measuring, and where they find your public bone. My Dr. says +/- 3 cm in either direction is normal. That statement still didn't stop me from worrying when my fundal height went up 4 cm in 2 weeks. But at my next appointment I had only grown another 1 cm....putting me back on track with the week of my pregnancy.

TL:DR version: its normal to worry, but I wouldn't worry TOO much. Especially since your doctor isn't worried.

  • I'm a ftm, but I also think sometimes people forget how big we do get towards the end, or don't really know in the first place. If your doctor isn't worried, I wouldn't be either.

  • Thanks ladies. As if there weren't enough things to worry about!!!
  • Also, for some reason, April 1 seems like June 1 for so many people when I tell them (for the hundredth time) my due date. They say "Really???? You have soooo much further to go!"

Ironically people seem to think March 3rd is forever and a day away saying "oh you got time".  I have 3 weekends left IF I don't go off early, one of which is going to Michigan this weekend for a funeral, I  have to finish off the nursery (decorative), dh HAS to insulate the garage, I have 2 fundraisers and a party to put together and new person to train at work and a damn "surprise shower"......

I want to throat punch the next person that says I have time to do anything in the next month.

Edit: PS Sorry for the thread jack.

PPS: what PP said, don't worry you sound like you are fine and if the Dr is ok with it than you should be ok.

Yesterday I was told by one woman that I looked like I had a while to go yet. Later on, another random woman said that I looked like I was ready to pop. These people aren't pregnant belly experts and have opinions like everyone has an asshole. Your belly measuring 2 weeks ahead is no big deal.
Yeah, when I was pregnant with DD I was told (multiple times) on the same day that I was small and big - by different people of course.  There's such a wide range of what a "normal" pregnant belly looks like and the average person is completely clueless!

As far as fundal height measurements go, it's a pretty subjective science.  2/3 cm in either direction is normal since there's room for error.  I've measured 3 weeks behind and 2 weeks ahead as well as right on track during this pregnancy!  I don't worry much about it.

  • I have experienced this since I was roughly 16 weeks.  People have no filter and apparently feel that it is okay to say whatever they want to a pregnant woman.
I have learned to take it in stride, but there have been days that I thought I would go postal if one more person made a comment.  I still get the shocked look when I tell people that I am due March 4th (like PP said it's not like it's June 4th).
My favorite comment thus far has been "my goodness is that baby going to come out the size of a kindergartener?" Thanks.  Thanks for that, school janitor you have been real helpful today.

Same here ^^  And I hate when I say "next month" and people are like, "March what?"  And I want to scream: WHY DO YOU CARE?  I DON'T EVEN KNOW YOU!!  I don't understand why complete strangers, whom I will never see again, make my belly their business.  (For the record, I like when people are nice about it, but I've noticed that the larger I get the more people seem to act entitled to know my business.)  Anyway, that was a little off topic.  My point is: try to tune out the stupidity!

  • Same thing happened to me yesterday. Cashier at Rite Aid asked me if I was having twins! I'm 35 weeks and I have only gained 14 pounds total, but that did hurt my feelings too!

Hope it makes you feel better to know you are not alone!
  • You need a few snarky comebacks to put people in their place. I'll start:
"Here's my OB's phone number. You should probably call her to let her know I'm too big, since she hasn't said anything about it yet."
I think I am going to start to use that!!!  Thanks @bandteacher

  • During the 2nd tri I got a lot of very concerned comments. It always cracked me up because I was like 25 weeks. Of course, I actually had polyhydramnios so it was abnormally large. Now it has gone down and I am getting the opposite. People are asking me if everything is ok b/c I don't look far enough along. I toured L&D this morning and even a nurse made a comment. I never know how to respond - yes, I'm monitored frequently, my kid just passed his NST and scan this morning, everything is fine. I also just ate a full sized burrito in one big gulp, so no, I'm not starving him.
  • People dont know what theyre talking about.... I get 'wow I didnt even notice your bump' to 'you really popped and got big in the last week' Im measuring 1 week ahead but I measured 1 week behind with DS1. As long as your OB hasnt had concern just ignore them all ;)

  • I got told all the time with DD1 that I looked "small", but I felt huge.  She was small at birth (IUGR) so there was reason for concern.  I did measure behind and was sent for a growth scan and had bi-weekly NST. She was small, but healthy.  DD2 (currently baking) is measuring right on, but the growth scan we had on 1/2 put her in the 64th percentile and I currently weigh now what I weighed when giving birth to DD1.  I have another appointment with a NST and biophysical profile and growth scan next week at 35 weeks to make sure everything is ok.  Overkill?  Probably.  But after having one tiny baby, I'm terrified of having another.  I would just make sure your dr continues to monitor you closely and even telling them about your friend and your concerns they may do even more to watch and put your mind at ease.  I'm of the mindset that you can't be too careful and thankfully we have excellent insurance!

This is me, not completely the same situation of course, but i look smaller for 36 weeks. People are like, are you eating??
No, i've decided to starve myself and her for 9 months.
Then when i tell them everything is good, they say 'less weight you have to lose after'
Really? Because thats on my mind.

I hear that about the weight too. I always just smile and nod b/c I actually gained weight after having my first. I have gained less weight with this pregnancy so I know I'm in for some plumping up come breastfeeding time! All the other ladies are dropping weight like ninety and my face just gets rounder and rounder.
  • Next time I get the your huge comment I think I may bust out with a due date of like June just to see the reaction!
  • People are stupid. My co worker came over to me and told me how big my belly was and then told me it will never go back to the way it was before. Thanks lady.
  • I told another coworker what the other one said about my ginormous belly. She told me to ask her if her doctor was worried about the size of her belly.
  • My son's teacher told me today "whoa, you've gotten a lot bigger since I saw you last!" Uh yeah, I'm almost 36 weeks and since DH does almost all drop offs and pick ups due to schedules, I haven't seen you since I was around 25 weeks! I just smiled and said "yep that happens"

  • This is why I love HDBD even though I don't post often.  It's reassuring to see what the range of normal bumps is.
