Trying to Get Pregnant

New to TTC - DH Spermies too Thick...

I have been married for almost 2 years (in May) and we have been TTC on and off since then. DH and I vowed to go at this full force starting this month. We have been back and forth, discouraged and given up only to start all over again. He has had an analysis done which shows everything was normal and count was great, however, the motility was low. I can't remember the exact numbers. The Doc explained that his sperm was too thick for them to swim around and there really wasn't anything we could do about it. However, my GYN said that wasn't the case.

Anyone else had this happen? What are some natural remedys or are there? My GYN offered doxycycline - bc it was known to thin sperm but we haven't tried it yet.

Open to any suggestions or hearing anyones stories! I don't want to give up just yet.

When it comes to sperm, I'd be trusting the urologist over your OBGYN.

  • Being the optimistic I am very slim doesn't mean never. We talked about trying a Fertile Aid, and getting a second opinion because that doctor is no longer there.

Definitely get a second opinion. Most RE's have you do two semen analyses if the first one is questionable anyway.

Also, don't try to self-medicate. Wait until you see a doctor who will run all of the proper testing and then come up with the proper plan for you.

  • Ditto to everyone who suggested a RE (reproductive endocrinologist) and Urologist.  You ob/gyn is not trained in getting people pregnant.

  • Was your urologist talking about viscosity of the semen?  Or the sperm themselves?  Viscosity can definitely affect the sperm's ability to swim up to the egg.

I'm wondering the same thing.  It almost sounds like a semen issue more than an actual sperm issue.

  • I am assuming so, referring to viscosity. He wasn't very forthcoming with answers to our questions, just kept saying it was a small chance, it wasn't impossible, but very small. I have been looking in the area for a RE and another urologist for him. We'll see what happens!

Thanks to everyone for your suggestions!!

  • Dito to PPs. I just want to add that when you get another opinion see a urologist who specializes in male fertility/infertility. We found that most uros don't know all the same things in relation to TTC. I would also get to an RE, but in my experience the RE deals with the woman's body; however since you have been trying for a while it's worth it.

  • I second (and third and fourth) all of the advice from PPs.  The only thing I will add is that my H had a great SA but they did note that the seminal fluid may be a little sticky, but didn't sound like a big deal.  They said that if that was causing any issue, doing the sperm wash/IUI could greatly help with that.  Good luck!
