Help me entertain 3 kids!

We have a small house.  Really small.  And it looks like tomorrow we are having another snow day so in addition to my 2 DDs, I will also have the 4 year old neighbor boy who I generally only have during school hours.  So 3 kids, small house and going anywhere or even outside is not an option.  And the kids all like different things.  DD1 could do arts and crafts probably all day, broken up by a hour long bath.  DD2 does not like arts and crafts or the bathtub but likes dressing up and having 'dance parties'.  Neighbor boy (who may or may not have some kind of autism diagnosis and also doesn't speak or understand much English) will fixate on strange things but has no interest in girly stuff like crafts and dancing.  Today he lined up Erector set pieces for 20 minutes before he moved to 4 hours of squishing playdough.  I really, really don't want it to be a TV and movie day.  Suggestions?

Re: Help me entertain 3 kids!

  • Follow their lead?

I never choose activities for my kids, maybe I am lazy like that.
  • Loading the player...
  • I never really chose activities, either.. especially on snow days (besides playing in the snow- can you all have a little time in the snow to burn some energy?).

I would just let them do their thing, honestly, and let them all do different things. I don't see a need in making sure all 3 kids are happy doing the same thing.  Let the one who will do crafts do a craft or two, let the other play dress up and let the other happily squish play doh for hours :)

  • If you want a group activity, you could make snow ice cream together. That's on our agenda today.
  • Set up crafts and playdoh at the table for DD1 and neighbor kid, and let DD2 play dress up dance party.

  • I hear you, I have the girls home, 34 weeks pregnant, my husband is recovering from a bad car accident, he broke his leg and collar bone. as much I hate to do it I am going to put on netflix and call it a day.
  • I would set out the erector set, play dough, a pile of crafty stuff to make a valentine's collage, turn on some music and call it a morning.  In the afternoon there would be quiet time with a movie followed by their 'help' making snack - snow ice cream, muffins, or something else they can be involved in.
Hallelujah, it's a miracle, I have children AND a signature!

  • On snow days when I have both kids I look after here (17mo and 3yrs) plus my older two, we've done finger painting with yogurt, playdoh, colored spaghetti (I think I have just as much fun as the kids lol), built forts, made obstacle courses out of couch cushions and pillows, baking, salt dough ornaments... Not all on the same day but I generally try to have a few activities ready to go and then just let the kids decide what they'd like to do. We have a small house too and my little one haaaaaates the snow right now so outside time is a struggle.
