1% chance of Trisomy 18

I just had my anatomy scan yesterday.  Tonight (Tuesday) at 6:15PM my OB calls to discuss my results.  There is a small amount of fluid somewhere it shouldn't be.  All my screening blood work has come back negative for chromosomal disorders but now I need to have another Level II ultrasound.  He says my chances are 1% for trisomy 18.  Has this happened to anyone else?  They say not to worry but I can't help freaking out w/ any chance.

  • No experience but ((hugs)) as any sliver of concern that things are not 100% with baby is terrifying.
I hope the 99% gives you some comfort while you wait for additional tests.
  • No experience here either but wanted to wish you well. 99% is good odds.

  • I agree with PP. the odds are in your favor. FX everything is ok.
  • If your blood work came back negative for chromosomal disorders then you should not worry. These blood tests are pretty accurate and I'm sure your Dr is just being thorough in his follow up ultrasound. T&P!
  • My T&P... while my experience isn't the same, I have been scheduled for a second level 2 a/s because "something caught my (the doctor's) eye", which freaked the crap out of me and the DH. One side of the brain is measuring at the high side of normal; she mentioned possible chromosomal issues and what my blood results were (1:10,000 btw). Totally freaked me out, but I'm trying to focus on the positive: nothing was identified as a definitive issue and we get to see the baby again in a few weeks. Good luck to you.

  • Try to focus on the 99% and not the 1%. Easier said then done but worrying will drive you insane. Fx everything is just fine!
  • I had similar results, 1 in 110. I think it is wording that makes it feel bad -high risk at those percentiles. I had a harmony test done and became low risk. My office is fairly conservative and also insisted on a genetic ultrasound which took the place of my anatomy scan since they are similar. I just had to go to a different location that specialized rather than my ob office. I'm sure everything is fine, but I understand the concern no matter what people tell you. You still want to hear you are low risk. GL!

  • Agree with the PPs - the odds are in your favor! I can appreciate how anxiety inducing the waiting game is, I was in your shoes two weeks ago. All I can say is try to relax and take care of yourself in the interim, and remember stressing won't change the outcome. (This is near impossible to do - but I found that bubble baths, naps and chocolate chip cookies helped!) Crossing all my fingers that everything is fine! Keep us updated, xx

  • At my autonomy scan we were told that the baby had a cyst in her brain. We were then scheduled for a level 11 ultrasound. The high risk ob did say that she has two small cysts in her brain but it's all about the placement of the cysts that makes they worry or not worry. Perhaps this is the same case with fluid? If it makes you feel any better, our doctor is not concerned at all and fully expects the cysts to go away by the third trimester. Hopefully this will be the case with you.
  • Hugs. I had loads of testing for trisomy disorders, and gentic syndromes etc BC of a high nt result. It is stressful, but I always try to take comfort in numbers. It sounds like your dr wants to be thorough. I wish i had good advice for getting through the wait. Its hard.Take good care of yourself, watch your favorite movies, etc. Your dr is on top of this, and there is a huuuuuge chance its nothing.

  • Try to stay positive. I also have to have a level II u\s in a couple weeks because they found a cyst on the umbilical cord near babys insertion site. I can totally relate to you, the unknown is hard to deal with and staying positive is definitely harder than it sounds but chances are everything is fine. Thoughts and prayers to you. Best of luck

  • It is def. scary to get any news like that and I am sending T&Ps your way. My advice is to try to think about it this way though-- if the weather called for a 1% chance of rain, would you bring an umbrella?

Feb siggy challenge- SO is a twatwaffle, so here is me & DD instead
