Normal gas vs reflux.

Hi ladies. I scanned all the previous posts on this and am not sure. She doesn't seem as bad as those babies on meds.
During the day, LO is perfectly fine, burps well, falls asleep in the boob, etc.
however, the past two days she has been pretty bad at night. Her middle of the night feeding has turned into a 2 hour debacle because she's so fussy and won't go back to sleep, I also spend about 40 min trying to get her to burp (when she's not super fussy she'll burp pretty much right away). No matter what at night and first thing in the morning she'll spit up, sometimes a lot sometimes a little, while I'm trying to burp her. You can also tell how she's kicking she's trying to push stuff out the other end.
Like I said it doesn't seem as bad as what other ppl have mentioned. Once she's down she'll sleep at night from 2 hours to 4. Last night she was screaming at the top of her lungs after a feed and diaper change, DH took over and said she spit up and then calmed right down.
Do u think it warrants calling the doc? Or just wait till our next visit (next Friday)? I just don't know if this is normal grassiness or more and don't want to be that mom that calls over every little thing.

Re: Normal gas vs reflux.

  • My LO has been doing something really similar and I've been wondering the same thing. Thank you for posting this.

Do you get engorged at night? Is she choking on the boob that feed?

I'm mobile, how old is LO? It kind of sounds like how J acts when he cluster feeds. Have you offered the boob again, even if it seems waayyy too soon?

Reflux usually they arch their back

If you're ever concerned there's no shame in calling!

Eta have you tried gas drops (simethecone) after her last feed prior to the trouble feed?

Eta x2 sounds normal to me... reflux is usually an all day thing unless she is sleeping at a different angle at that time compared to during the day

Not engorged at night. She does do a semi cluster feed at night.., more of a she's sleepy so will fall asleep on one boob starting at 6 pm so eats every hour at that point. She does cough during let down but I take her off right after that and sit her up and them put her back on.
    She is almost 5 weeks.

  • This sounds like my LO. He'll be 7 weeks tomorrow, but the spitting up has been going on for a while. I'm probably overreacting, but we're headed to the pedi today. At the very least I can make sure he's gaining well- then I won't be so worried about the spit up.

  • I edited to add that it sounds normal to me... reflux is usually an all day thing unless she is sleeping at a different angle at that time compared to during the day.

My baby has driven me nuts doing similar things. Then I get the hang of what to expect And he stops doing it And starts doing something else that worries me

  • DD has silent reflux so no spitting up but she would scream after every single feeding. Gas can be brutal and worse at night.

  • Yeah that sounds normal to me..it was explained to me that all babies have reflux, it just bothers some more than others. My pedi said they wouldn't treat unless she refuses to eat or becomes regularly inconsolable. And the meds would just make it burn less, not make it go away. But personally that just sounds like a bad gas night....and gas issues she'll grow out of eventually. HTH!

  • I'm having similar problems. Although DS2 is also fussy during the day. I've started burping multiple times during a feed…mainly a couple minutes in after my let down is finished and he's not gulping milk down. I've also started rubbing his back in a circular motion with some pressure  rather than patting to burp and that seems to help the first few burps..okay more like baby belches...come out.

DS1 had reflux and some of their movements are the same, but some are different so even I'm not sure. Are you eating/drinking anything specifically at night that may bother LO? Hope you can find a solution. It's pretty awful.

  • Sounds normal to me.... did you have a c-section. Might be worth a visit to an Osteopathic Dr. They can do wonders for babies with lots of spit up  --- i know from experience.
