Foot cramps that bring tears. Do you get them?

These are no joke!!!!!!! They hurt so bad they make me sweat and cry like a cry baby. Has anyone else experienced this? Anything to help prevent them? I have an appointment early in the morning so I'll bring it up to my dr.

Re: Foot cramps that bring tears. Do you get them?

  • I HATE foot cramps. I try to drink more, stay hydrated, eat bananas and all that stuff but sometimes I just still get them. Standing on my foot seems to help, though it can be almost as painful as the cramp anyway, so...

  • I used to get these a lot during swim team when I did my turns. So bad all of my toes would curl over on themselves. I'm starting to get them here and there. Stay hydrated is a huge factor and don't over extend your feet. I call it ballerina feet haha. I had a bad habit of doing ballerina feet coming out of a turn which actually hindered rather than helped because then I'd be in pain the rest of the lap >.<

  • Yes, I'm getting them too but mostly in my calves.  They tend to creep up on me when I'm in bed sleeping, especially on days where I have a harder than usual workout.  I'm trying to drink a ton of water (120+ oz per day) and eat a banana each day, which has helped some.  Good luck, I know they're super painful!

  • I used to get them in my calves at night. I started taking my prenatals before bed with a big glass of water and that seemed to do the trick. I also drink a few sips of water every time I get up to pee.

  • Ugh yes! Mine hurt so bad the other day that I couldn't walk for about 20 minutes. I just keep trying to drink more water but that isn't helping too much.

  • My feet have been getting more sore, but not to the tears extent. I have been getting really bad leg cramps though. At my last massage my RMT did a series of foot stretches for me and it felt amazing. She was gently pushing on my sole and then also bending my foot against the arch direction.

Before yoga I like to do a sole stretch against a wall, I put the toes on the wall and my heel on the ground and put pressure in the ball of my feet to stretch them out. Also, if you sit kind of kneeling, so your feet are propping you up, with toes touching the ground, and put pressure on your heels with your bum,  it gives your sole a nice stretch too.

I also agree with other PPs that water and bananas could really help as well.

  • Yes I get them. More often on days when I have to wear heels at work. Being hydrated doesn't seem to matter. I also get them in the middle of the night sometimes. Standing on the foot to force it to flatten is the only thing that makes them stop. Agree that they are horrible!!!

  • Yes!! I was going to post about foot pains too! It's fine now, but the other day it hurt so bad! I feel like for me it's the added weight of my body that makes my foot hurt. For me, elevating it for a while helped.

  • Mine have been bad leg cramps and foot cramps. I eat a banana every day and try to drink 100oz of water a day and then I drink about half a cup of water everytime I get up to pee and it helps them not be so painful but hasn't made them completely go away.
  • I've heard magnesium is supposed to help too.

  • Yes...been getting them for the past 4 weeks now.  They are killer!  I notice potassium helps some, so I have been eating more bananas and thinking of buying some coconut water, too.

  • I get them there and also in my calf. They are awful! My dr told me I could be low in magnesium or calcium and could take a magcal supplement, drink plenty of water, and stretch before bed.
  • Magnesium! Most of us are getting lots of calcium, which helps muscles to contract, but not enough magnesium which helps them to relax. You can talk to your doctor about a supplement or eat more foods high in magnesium: oatmeal, sunflower seeds, beans, quinoa to name a few. Bonus, if you are constipated it will help with pooping, too! And, as always, drink plenty of water!
