Diaper pail?

Just wondering if you guys think getting a diaper genie or arm & hammer diaper pail is worth it, considering you have to buy refill bags.  Never used one with ds, just took the poopy diapers out to the garage.  We have a lot of stairs in our new house though so I don't think it will be practical to do that with twins.

Re: Diaper pail?

  • I have the arm and hammer ones. I keep one in the nursery and one in the downstairs bathroom, I like them never notice any odors and only empty every 3 days or so.

  • We have a diaper genie - and if you use one of those clear recycling bags, a strong heavy duty elastic and an empty diaper genie ring - the refill you make is practically free - I think you could Google or youtube it to see how to do it.
  • I used both at one point so here's my 2 cents. Both are good at keeping the (pee) smell down. If you put solid food poops in either one, esp for multiple days in a row, they will both reek so badly you will not want to sit anywhere near them in the same room. I think the genie is slightly better at containing the smell, but that's like saying 2 rotten eggs smell better than 3. Emptying either one of poopy diapers means confronting the worst smell ever and is basically a contest to see how long you can hold your breath. The A&H wins on this point because it's faster to change out the bag. We had to change the genie outside because it took too unbearably long inside (we cheated and didn't use the special bags though so that was partly why.) we ended up using the A&H upstairs for pee diapers bc it's easier to open one-handed, the regular kitchen trash for pee diapers downstairs and throwing poop diapers outside. You have a few months before you start solids and by that point it's not as crazy hectic so it's not too bad IMO to bring down the poops when you come downstairs. I do think it's worth getting a diaper pail upstairs though because I wouldn't want to bring down every diaper.
  • We had one for our first kiddo, but found we were changing it so much we could just throw diapers in the regular garbage and take it out regularly with the same benefit. It was inefficient for us.
  • We had a diaper champ with our Singleton and plan to use it again this time around... not sure if they still make it, though. It uses regular trash bags. SHAKE THE DIAPER PAIL when it starts to get full and you get a few more days out if it. As for the solid poop, flush the poo and you don't have to worry about the smell so much.
  • I am getting one, I don't want to run down the stairs and leave the twins alone 10 times pr day!
  • I just use a normal old covered trash can and little dog poop bags

  • we use a diaper genie and change it once a week and did the same with our first. never has it smelled with either kids or costed much at all. every so often the inside will get a buttered popcorn like smell from the poop diapers so i toss a scentsy thing in there.

  • We love our diaper genie....we have to change the bags out almost every day b/c of the MASS amounts of diapers :) but I like that I have somewhere to throw then and it keeps the smells at bay.

  • We use a Diaper Genie with DD and love it. Her room doesn't really stink and it's definitely way easier than going down to the garbage every time.

  • We just got two small-ish pop top garbage cans from Target and they work great! We put one in the garage for the downstairs poo diapers and then one in the upstairs guest bathroom for the nighttime changes. Honestly it hasn't been stinky at all. And they were only $9.99 each!
