due date question: what dr says vs what sonogram says

Hi ladies,

So according to the due date the doctor gave me I should be 34 weeks. I went to have a sonogram today and the tech told me according to my measurements the baby is measuring at 37 weeks and weighs about 6 lbs. has this happened to anyone else before? should I expect to have the baby according to what the tech says or according to what the Dr says? I have a doctors appointment tomorrow and plan on asking him, but I was just wondering if this is happened to anyone else and what the outcome was?

    Late growth scans can be off by quite a bit so a good OB won't change your EDD based off a 3rd tri u/s alone. Ultrasounds can be used for accurate dating in early pregnancy but not late pregnancy.

    FWIW my DD's 3rd tri growth scan was off by about 2lbs and my twins were off by 3/4-1lb.

    Early (first-trimester) dating scans are quite accurate in figuring out when the baby was probably  conceived.  Most doctors work back from their to figure out how far along you are.    Once the baby starts to get bigger, they grow at different rates, so dating a pregnancy is a lot harder.   

    Having said that, your baby will be ready when he's ready :-)   Nobody can really predict when he's going to be born.  If you're measuring ahead, then your doctor is probably carefully monitoring his size and may consider inducing you before he gets too big to deliver vaginally.

    Go by your last period and what your doctor says. Size of the baby does not always coordinate with the due date. My son was 9.1 at 40 weeks so if I went by the norm I would have had the baby almost a month early, which was not ever the case.

    Did you have a dating ultrasound around 8-10 weeks?  Those are the most accurate assuming you don't know your ovulation date.  Probably that's what your 34 weeks are from.  Late pregnancy ultrasounds are really very inaccurate for dating or weight guesses

    Like PP said, the dr will most likely continue to go by your original due date. At this point during your pregnancy, babies tend to grow at their own rate. Some babies will gain more weight than the average while others wont. And as far as the estimated weight, that can definitely be off by a lot. I was told my son wouldn't be any bigger than 6 lbsbbecause he was measuring small, and he came out a healthy 7 lbs 4 oz.

    When I was 34 weeks, they told me I was two weeks ahead so I would've been 36 weeks. Baby was way bigger than she should've been at 34 weeks. When I actually hit the 36 week mark, my water broke and I had her within 24 hours. I don't think that is accurate. Whether she was farther ahead or not, they come when they want anyways lol but I was so excited when they said they thought I was two weeks more than what they originally thought.

    Oh and they also said my daughter was right around 7 pounds. She was 5 pounds & 14 ounces :)

    They said my DH was 5lbs and a girl. He was 9lbs and a boy! Haha :-) I'm measuring 2w ahead too but think baby is just big like its daddy!

    This happened to me as well but my doctor assured me that the sonogram was most likely off. So I am just going by my due date! I figure she will come whenever she is ready regardless!

    sonogram was more accurate. dr. was a day off versus 1 day from sonogram
