Potty Training yet?

I haven't been on here in FOREVER but DH and I are TTC so I've been lurking on my birthmonth group for #2

Just wondering if anyone has started potty training yet? I feel like my son is not ready. He drinks SO much still and he refuses to sit on the potty. A friend sent me a PDF she bought about 3 day potty training but its 50 pages so I need to find time to read it.

Re: Potty Training yet?

  • We're in the process of training, we're actually a bit more casual about it this time around than we were with DD who was done during the day at 26mo, then 28 for nights too... I highly doubt DS is going to be done at either of those points.. Make sitting on the potty fun - they'll eventually get the idea... We have "Potty Books" that only get read while DS is sitting on the potty. One flushes, the other has little pull-tabs, and another is a potty TRAIN story... Have them sit when you sit (then get up and wash their hands just like you do too!). Eventually something happens by accident and you reinforce the heck out of it such that eventually they "catch on" (stickers, Hershey kisses, M&M's also make itsy bitsy great rewards)... We have two different seats that he sits on, one is a stand-alone "sounds" seat that we used when DD was little, the other is a Cars seat that goes on the big potty. DS is also in training at his DCP so we try to keep things consistent at home too. While I'm not one to do the "3 days and done" type method at this age because different things work for different kids, once they "figure it all out" it's about 3 days at that point before things are mostly done (accidents happen!).. That said, I had one friend who waited until about two weeks before her kids started kindergarten to train them - I simply can't imagine!!!

  • We have started here and there but he hasn't gone on the potty yet. I think we will start the 3 day method next weekend but I need to read up on it.

He sits on the potty before bath and goes about half the time. He's told us he had to pee and then did a few times. He hasn't went #2 on there though.

I'm intrigued by the 3 day method but not sure I have the stamina and time availability to do it with a very needy 6 week old in the house too.

  • just starting this weekend actually.  I have zero interest in the 3-day method though - mostly because I was afraid what would happen if it didn't work in 3 days and then she'd back at daycare.
Basically, we're just putting her on the potty every so often during the day and daycare will take the same approach next week.

  • DS1 is perfectly willing to sit on the potty. He loves his potty books and washing his hands. He absolutely refuses to actually GO on the potty, though. He just isn't ready yet, and I don't want this to turn into an exercise in frustration for all of us so I'm ok with waiting until the right time.

  • DS has been fully potty trained since October. We put little potties in all our bathrooms when he was around 16 months and he'd hop on and off when we were in there. We didn't push anything because we had lots of travel plans over the summer and early fall, but he was definitely introduced to the concept.

DH and I both took vacation time in October to stay home and focus on potty training. We used jamieglowacki.com as a resource and followed DS's lead. It helped that his daycare was totally supportive of whatever method we wanted to try. He was accident free within a week or two and is now dry when he wakes up from naps. We still put him in a pullup overnight, but more than half the time, he's dry in the mornings as well.

DD2 potty trained at 22 months. I think it helps that she has an older sister :) I did take a long weekend to really work with her, but she was already going on the potty fairly frequently at that point. We go straight to undies when we potty train and use a lot of positive reinforcement (and M & Ms). It helps a ton that our daycare was very supportive of whatever we wanted to do. DD2 is pretty self sufficient now. She uses the regular potty. No potty chair. No ring on the potty. She just pulls up a stool and does it all by herself (I do have to make sure she wipes). She's been wearing a pull-up at night, but she wakes up dry more often than not. I have to say, I'm really excited to be moving past the diapers stage.

  • We are slowly potty training.  I don't think he's really ready for a full on commitment to it, but he goes every morning after he wakes up, before bath time and before bed.  This weekend I would ask if he needed to go and sometimes he'd say yes so we'd go to the potty.   Right now we're just using the big potty.

With DD we took a relaxed approach to potty training until we felt that she seemed ready and then it happened really quickly that she was completely trained (and night trained).

I mentioned this to daycare today so they said they were going to start offering the potty to him as well.

  • No, not yet. :-)

  • He usually goes on the potty if I put him on there, but he pees in his diapers if don't put him on the potty soon enough. He's gone through phases of either wanting to go use the potty (often in public places - ha) or being resistant to it. Lately he just doesn't want to be bothered to stop playing to be changed OR to sit on the potty. We have had a few days of diapers staying dry all day because I deliberately took him to use the potty often enough all day long. He usually tells me when he needs to poop and if I get him onto the potty fast enough we avoid a poopy diaper. We first introduced the potty around 18-19 months. We definitely still need night time diapers and I don't foresee that changing very soon. We haven't done any specific rewards, just a lot of verbal praise.

  • I want to so bad. We are slowly getting there. I definitely want him to be trained by 3. He is just getting used to saying he has to potty but most of the time he has already gone. In do time, I guess.
