best size chalk for this age?

We are getting LO a chalkboard-- is regular thin chalk better for this age because of their little hands?  or is the fat sidewalk chalk better because it won't break?

Anyone tried either?

  • We use both. It isn't terribly expensive so I bought both just to see which worked for him. He doesn't seem to have a preference.

  • Small chalk is best for developing fine motor skills, specifically the pincer grasp that is necessary for learning to hold a pencil correctly. But sidewalk chalk is fun :)
