best size chalk for this age?

We are getting LO a chalkboard-- is regular thin chalk better for this age because of their little hands?  or is the fat sidewalk chalk better because it won't break?

Anyone tried either?

    We use both.  Both kids at that age did fine with both.

    We use both. It isn't terribly expensive so I bought both just to see which worked for him. He doesn't seem to have a preference.

    Small chalk is best for developing fine motor skills, specifically the pincer grasp that is necessary for learning to hold a pencil correctly. But sidewalk chalk is fun :)
    DS born 8/8/09 and DD born 6/12/12.
