Military to civilian life....Help?

I'm starting to feel the pressure my poor hubby has felt for the last few months.

He is getting out of the Army this summer and we've already decided that he is going to try and get his education/GI bill used right away in hopes that it helps out with his end goal of being a police officer.

So for those of you with any experience in transitioning out of military life and/or law enforcement, any tips? We're trying to make the transition as seamless as possible.

I also plan on starting work again full-time while DH goes to school. How far in advance do you think I should start applying for work? It's been a long time since I've had to worry about working and I feel like I'm so far behind

Good luck! I was almost in your position but re enlistment papers are being signed this week. I would start looking now it is tough out there.

No advice, just good luck!!!!! My husband is in the process of being medboarded so this will probably be us in about a year or less.

No real advice...I was almost 10 when my dad retired

So my main transition was the cold of WI and new school

I dont think either of my parents had lined up jobs before we moved...but this was also 1992.

Definitely about getting things rolling with the VA because they take their sweet time paying for tuition and getting BAH going.. We usually end up getting back paid because DH isn't the most proactive with paperwork lol

I would start looking for jobs at least a month in advance if it is vital that you work immediately upon getting to your new home.

It will be ok. It's an adjustment but things will work out.

Thanks ladies!

We are moving back to NM. We're going to be moving in with my parents until we get on our feet and can find a place we can afford.

As far as my career, I got my degree in equine studies with one concentration in training and one in business management. So basically it's useless except for the business portion of my degree. And I already decided that my horse career is going to be put on hold for now.

I will make sure he starts filling out the paperwork! I'm really not surprised that they are slackers about getting things done Lol Yay military >.<

@mermomo5 Did they do any on campus classes while going to school? DH has to do at least one (and probably will have to do most of them that way) in order to receive BAH. Our city and state like to hire military first if they can and have a special program for those who have been in the military.

@skleigh Can you PM me about how you did your DIY move? I've heard from several people that they made money that way but I've never done it before and I don't know how to go about it to make money off it.

Hahaha DH and I are more than ready to move back to the desert so I doubt MA would ever be on our radar..or, at least not on his Lol
