Had mine done last Wednesday at 39 weeks, some bleeding, but not much else. (I was 2.5 cm & 75% effaced) Will have it done tomorrow. It's one of those things that if your body is ready, it will go, otherwise it's just something to try.
From what I've heard, if you're body is ready to go it can jumpstart things but it's not going to do much if you're not ready.
My personal concern with doing it (and why I'd chose to decline) is they can accidentally break your water when doing it, which could be problematic too.
I had it done at 39.2 and my baby was born the next morning. It was definitely uncomfortable, and afterwards had contractions but no clear progression all night. At 4am woke up in real labor and my daughter was born at 8. My doctor said she thought it worked better on 2nd+ pregnancies. Maybe it would have happened then anyway, but it seemed to help things along.
I had mine stripped yesterday (I am close to 3cm dilated and I'm 80% effaced) at 8:30am and it was really painful. This is our 3rd child and nothing has happened. I just lost more of my mucous plug and cramped a little but nothing else. This kid is just stubborn. I have a feeling I will make it to my induction date (2/10)
I just had mine stripped 2 hours ago...so I will let you know! Fingers crossed that it will move things along. So far other than a few irregular contractions there hasn't been any change.
It really wasn't bad/painful. A bit uncomfortable but that was about it.
Mine were at 37w6d, labor contractions started 24 hours later but wouldn't progress or stay regular and they wouldn't stop. 12 hours later had gone from 3-5cm but had to have my water broken. Daughter was born an hour and forty five minutes later.
Re: Any successful/unsuccessful membrane sweep stories?

Good luck deciding.
