Heartburn from HELL

I have had heartburn since the day I found out I was pregnant and now at almost 24 weeks it is even worse. I want to throw up just to get it out but nothing comes out! I have taken Tums, I am currently taking Zantac 150 daily, I drink milk every day....Nothing works. Wakes me up out of dead sleep and then I can't go back to bed. The only positive is to this is this is my only bad pregnancy symptom at this point.

Re: Heartburn from HELL

  • shots of apple cider vinegar help with mine..sounds weird but it's a nice homeopathic remedy that has been working for me so I don't pop meds and eat a bottle of tums a day

  • I would suggest talking to your OB. She might prescribe Nexium.or some type of prescription strength meds for your heartburn.
  • Try Gaviscon. It's the only thing that worked for me when my HB was so bad it brought me to tears (pre-pregnancy).  It's preggo-safe as well.

  • I had to get medication for GERD. I didn't want to risk getting Barrett's Esophagus. There are actually several pregnancy safe options, just ask your doctor. Mine phoned mine in for me- I didn't even need an appointment.

  • Milk is probably inflaming you more. I would try cutting it out and see if it provides any relief.

    The reason I believe this:

    https://whole30.com/2013/03/the-dairy-manifesto/

"Casein, especially when it comes from aged cheese, also causes a specific type of immune system reaction called a histamine response . Histamine intolerance can cause headaches, GI upset, exacerbations of asthma, and seasonal allergies. It is unclear what percentage of the population has this response, but until you have completely removed all dairy proteins from your diet for a period of time, you won’t know whether or not you are affected."

"If lactose cannot be properly digested, bloating and gastrointestinal upset may result. In addition, consuming even small amounts of lactose may contribute to an imbalance of gut bacteria, promoting dysbiosis. In addition, many people who consider themselves lactose-intolerant (by observing that dairy makes them feel poorly) may have a sensitivity to dairy proteins as well."

  • I woke up and had to burp, but acid shot into my mouth instead. Told DH why I was coughing.

    DH: "She hates you already."

  • After my reflux and m/s bad combo caused a tear in my esophagus my doctors finally okayed me switching back to my prilosec. I was taking Zantac and it barely touched it. Prilosec is amazing :)

  • i would also agree that the milk could be making it worse!!  I have been on prescription medication for over 5 years for acid reflux and have had the scope done to see just how much damage has been done from the acid.  I have found if i drink milk anytime after 6-7 pm i am hurting even with my medication....i try and drink water before bed and sleep on my left side which sounds weird but totally helps!!  If nothing helps i would check with your OB to see if you can get on something a little stronger to help!!!
  • I agree that milk makes it worse! But I have no good solutions. Mine has been getting worse recently, and I haven't found a solution other than Tums, which don't always help.

  • @hollygb22 and @joules235- Thanks for the apple cider vinegar and probiotic suggestion!  I've been dealing with a lot of heartburn too.  I'm definitely going to try this!

  • If Zantac isn't working definitely talk to your OB.  You could probably increase to 150 mg twice per day (or 1 every 12 hours).

  • Whatever you do, avoid cheez-its, they are the heartburn devil I disguise! I like mylanta for hb when it's bad, but some days I've had hb from carrots. The joys of being pregnant at least outweigh the woes once that baby arrives!!!

  • I guess it's an UO, but a huge glass of ice cold milk before I lay down for bed seems to coat my throat and works better than Tums or anything else I've tried.

  • I have been having indigestion (or is it heart burn?) where you feel this uncomfortable burning feeling in your throat. I've never felt it before and it started at around 21 weeks. I don't have it every day but I eat similar stuff every day so I wonder if there are certain foods that trigger it?
  • Heartburn is probably the worst symptom at the moment for me. I can get it from drinking water. I'm going to check out the milk though since I've been drinking it like crazy (two gallons a week-maybe more crazy). I just chew gross tums. I have appt this week so I may have to ask about this Prilosec. I hope we all find relief...though I suspect it might not be til June

  • I've been lucky enough to pretty much avoid this horrible pregnancy side effect but DH gets terrible heartburn. He went in for an endoscopy before Christmas and the dr prescribed a stronger Zantac (150 mg maybe?) to take right before bed and the regular strength when he wakes up in the morning. He also said to avoid eating like 4 hours before bed- especially large meals- and to avoid caffeine, alcohol (which I'm sure isn't a problem for you right now!) and mentioned that DH should pay attention to how he feels after dairy to see if it causes a reaction. Last thing he told us- if it's bothering DH at night- we should put small wooden blocks under the legs of our headboard. He said elevating the bed and/or using pillows to elevate his head sometimes makes a big difference. Since the appt, DH has been soooo much better just from taking the Zantac twice daily. Anyway- just FWIW- that's our experience. Obviously need to talk to your dr before taking any meds, but I hope you find relief soon...heartburn is a beast!

Have you tried the fruit flavored Tums?  They taste a lot better than the regular Tums.  I asked my doctor about Prilosec and she told me no.

Oh yeah, I forgot about that when I replied. My doctor did have us put bricks under the top legs of the bed. That did help and DH doesn't notice it.

  • Is anyone else having the painful hard-to-express burps? I'm getting them with the heartburn. Maybe it was the ice cream?
