Hi all!
My LO arrived last Saturday afternoon and he's already causing undue stress to his poor parents, haha.
Henry Jefferson (DH's name is Jeff...Jefferson was his idea!) arrived Saturday around 3 after roughly a day and a half of off and on contractions starting Thursday late at night that got serious enough to go the hospital at 5AM on Saturday AM. L&D was surprisingly smooth and I got the vaginal delivery I wanted. He was 8 lbs 7 oz. and only 4 days early so I think he was clearly ready! Got a nasty tear out of it but overall it all went just fine. I had high BP throughout labor but they tested for Pre-E and it was negative so they said it was just gestational high BP brought on by labor. As a first time mom I have to say it was a pretty amazing experience, as much as it definitely hurt like a mother even with an epidural.
However, after he was born he was having a bit of trouble breathing and getting enough oxygen and they took him down to the NICU to sort him out and he's still there now--looks like he will be for a week or so on a course of antibiotics and getting oxygen. He's doing better every day and we're lucky that it's a very treatable problem but it still broke our hearts not to be able to hold him and be with him. The first night when we were alone in the hospital room and he was in the NICU was hard and now that we are home and he's still there we have our moments of being sad but overall he's doing much better and that helps. We visit as much as we can and I've been pumping and bringing in my milk and he's just started getting it via tube. They had a hard time nailing down exactly what the problem was and they think it was an infection (could have been Strep B, I was positive and I did get antibiotics in labor but they can't be sure) that he got via being birthed that settled in his lungs and made breathing effectively hard. We've been able to hold him a few times in the last few days and it was wonderful--I keep saying that once we get him home we are never going to let him go! I am going to barricade the three of us in the house for a few days so we can have some family time with just us, no visitors, and it's going to be amazing.
He's our child so he's stubborn and independent just like us and while this will probably prove frustrating in his teen years, they are valuable traits now and we have every reason to think that he will pull through and be home with us soon!
Congratulations to all the other new mamas out there and good luck to the mamas to be! I've definitely loved having this board to lean on during tough days when it was just reassuring to see other people going through the same things as me. I can't wait to see all of your babies enter the world and grow!
