High-Risk Pregnancy

Cerclage questions

Hi Ladies.  Been following this board for awhile, but not saying too much as I'm still early and just nervous.  I'll be 14 weeks on Thursday, and Friday I am having a preventative cerclage placed.  Last year my son was born early at 18w4d due to possible incompetent cervix and possible PTL.  After a scare this weekend, possibly leaking amniotic fluid, we have determined I am not and will be moving forward with cerclage.  During the check yesterday though, my OB stated that my cervix was high and they would have to "pull it down".  Sounds scary to me right now.  Has anyone else experienced this?  The doc said there would be tons of pressure, mentioned they may have to put me under general anesthesia.  Again, sounds scary, I thought that wasn't allowed.  Has anyone experienced general, versus the spinal?

Scared but hopeful.

Re: Cerclage questions

  • I'm sorry for your loss! I had an emergency cerclage at 19 weeks (now 24 weeks) under a spinal. My MFM did tell me she was able to 'pull the cervix down a bit to get more of it closed'. I'm not exactly sure what that means, but I kind of thought that part of it was funneled and she tried to pull this part closer together a bit. I had a previous spinal for a c-section and was much more numb than with my cerclage. I could still move my legs slightly and feel some movement, but I wouldn't say pressure and definitely not pain. I would imagine that placing a stitch would be as sensitive as pulling, so hopefully you avoid the general anesthesia. Best wishes for a healthy and happy rest of your pregnancy.

  • I was given the option of general or a spinal during my cerclage. The anesthesiologist assured me that they were equally safe for baby and simply had different side effects for the mom.

I chose general and I still think it was a great decision- my cerclage was placed with funneling down to 10mm and after cerclage I measured 13mm at 20w and 15mm at 24w- so its a really stable stitch despite the precarious measurement at which I was cerclaged. And I didn't feel a thing, which was nice :)
