Prenatal Yoga... Life Changing!

Oh my goodness why didn't I discover this earlier!!!? At 22 weeks, my mobility was already feeling limited, I was sleeping horribly, my libido was gone, and I was feeling completely useless at work (I'm a teacher). This week not only am I waking up wanting sexy time, my husband says I am moving around the house like I'm not even pregnant! At work I was efficient, and although I still wake up due to thirst and having to pee (vicious cycle), I'm not waking up in pain. I LOVE prenatal yoga and if any of you ladies haven't tried it I beg you to do so!!!

Re: Prenatal Yoga... Life Changing!

  • Speaking of yoga... Can anyone comment on the difference between prenatal yoga and regular yoga?

I have a membership at Goodlife which includes regular yoga for free, but no pre-natal. I only started doing yoga when I got pregnant (before I was more into the high intensity workout classes), but I'm worried that with all the lying on the back, planks, and lying on belly), regular yoga may not be good.

I don't want to pay extra for the prenatal yoga elsewhere if the difference isn't too substantial - any yoga masters out there with advice?

  • I do a lot of regular and prenatal yoga, and while I probably prefer the prenatal version at this point in my pregnancy, you can still do the regular kind.  Just look online for preggo adaptations for different poses, or, even better, ask your yoga teacher to help show you some modifications during class. For instance, there's a different set of sun salutations you do when you're pregnant that don't have you lower to your belly.

I think it also depends on your class. There are some classes I can still do easily, with just some modifications. But others use a lot of poses that are uncomfortable or not a good idea during pregnancy, and I just skip those ones.

  • MadiMac:  I love it too!!!  I've been doing prenatal yoga videos since I learned I was pregnant, and it has been HUGE for me.  It's helped me keep blood flowing to the uterus, it's helped me relax, it's helped me stretch my round ligaments without much pain.  I love my videos!

aleksandra_irmina:  Some (most?) prenatal yogas specifically help with blood flow to the uterus, help to stretch things that pregnant women need help with, and focus on making the stretches safe for a growing belly.  I've been using these videos: https://www.amazon.com/Complete-Prenatal-Vinyasa-Short-Forms/dp/B0032ZOXYO and I LOVE them.  I have literally been doing yoga every single night since I learned I was pregnant, and I feel it's really been great for me.  (About half of the nights it's one of these videos, the other half I just do my own stretches inspired by the videos at my own pace).

  • @MadiMac
do you go to a class or have a DVD? I hated the DVD I got last time around but would love a recommendation if you, or anyone else, has one.

  • Awesome, thanks! I never even thought of doing videos... That's probably much more cost effective than paying for additional classes
  • I got a prenatal yoga DVD and tried it for the first time this weekend. I'm hoping it will help with back pain. I like it so far, but holy cow is it hard! I am so out of shape...

  • I found a studio here in Sacramento that is only classes for moms! They do prenatal, and post pardum, as well as host non yoga classes for labor and first month with baby etc. The big bonus for me with the classes is the social part of it. In my first class I met one woman with my same due date, and a bunch of women due within a couple weeks of me! Also, taking labor classes with these women will be much better than taking it with complete strangers somewhere else.
  • I'm still doing my regular Pilates class and modifying when I need to... Which is starting to be more and more. My instructor is very experienced (and has been pregnant - always a plus) and is great about advising me. If you have a good instructor I wouldn't hesitate to take a regular class, but if you take a free yoga class at your gym the instructor quality may vary a lot. I'd love to supplement my routine with a prenatal yoga class.

  • I agree, I got back into yoga when I got pregnant after a year or so away and it has been wonderful. I have to thank this forum for the recommendation of yogaglo.com -- it has been so worth the $18 a month for me, I do one of their classes almost every day. I did want to ask how often you guys are doing yoga as you get farther along -- I'll be 20 weeks Friday. Do you do half an hour? An hour? Every day? Three times a week? I'll do it as often as I can but I wonder what everybody else is doing :)

  • I do yoga every evening.  Most evenings it's 20-30 minutes, and maybe once or twice a week it's either 45 minutes or 1 hour, 15 minutes.  (I do other exercise during the day for cardio).

  • I start a prenatal yoga class on Sunday! I'm really looking forward to it. I did not feel well at all in the beginning and would only go for walks here and there. I am so happy I am feeling better and am starting to walk more and ride our exercise bike 5-10km every night :) yoga is going to be a plus!
  • i practice regulary. I have now stopped going to regular classes and just prenatal. I normally took alot of vinyassa classes. The twisting was just too much and I felt like most moves were modified.
  • I really want to do this, but havent found too many places that offer it near me.  Now I will definitely keep looking!

  • god to know! the videos i had while pg with my first were too tame for me- i still want to work out. i just ordered a few from amazon and the tracy anderson pg dvds. i do a crossfit boot camp twice weekly, but i am modifying lots of the moves as i get farther along and need something else to keep up with the pb cup stuffed oreo habit i developed last week.
