Pregnant after 35

Flu while pregnant

I was just wondering if anyone had the flu during pregnancy? I know it can be really dangerous. I feel like a real idiot because I have not had the flu shot. (I know how bad that is, I had someone that I trusted that advised me against it now I see how important it is). My Mom is in the hospital and she tested negative for the flu but now I am freaking a little. I am going tomorrow to get the shot but I know I am not the first to miss the flu shot while pregnant. I was just wondering if anyone here got it and how your treatment went? After talking to my OB, I now know how important it is and that it can benefit baby after it is born.  I usually get one every year ugh!

Re: Flu while pregnant

  • I have not had the flu while pregnant.  I got the shot at about 16 wks.  Hope you stay healthy!

  • I have not had the flu, got the shot at 16 weeks.  I know there are some meds that you can take but you would have to talk to your Dr if you did get the flu.  If you can stay away from your relative who has the flu right now that would probably be best.

I know it does take about 2 weeks I believe for the shot to become affective after you get it so even if you get it today you will not be covered.

Oh just read she does not have the flu, well that is good.  Good that you are getting the shot.  To help prevent, wash hands often.  I am a teacher 2nd grade.  I am always washing my  hands.  I even clean my cell phone once in awhile since so many germs can linger on that.

Good luck, hope your mom is feeling better.

  • I had a flu shot in October, but I'm still pretty paranoid about getting sick. I had two meetings in the past week with a client who was finally able to drag herself out of bed, and she did not look good. I wouldn't touch any of her stuff and rushed to wash my hands thoroughly after the meetings. I'm diabetic, so I'm already kind of a germaphobe.

I hope your mom feels better soon.

  • Thank you for the input.  We have had bad weather with slick roads so I can't get the shot today but I am off work for the next 2 days so hopefully roads will be clear tomorrow.

Thank you!  She seems to be doing better today.  I am steering clear of the hospital and just phoning her.

  • I'm in this boat right now. I can't get flu shot bc of adverse reactions and a pre existing condition. My 15 month old son was just diagnosed with the flu. Doing everything I can to prevent getting it, but I'm the one he wants when he doesn't feel well.

I teach 4th grade too...lots going around my class. I'm just getting over strep throat.

For now, lots of hs washing, drinking lots, staying on top of my vitamins, and trying to stay well rested so I can fight t off if I do get it.

  • I had the flu and was able to eat a little bit and keep fluids down. I was also able to keep my temp under 100 degrees with Tylenol every 4 to 6 hours. My doctor wasn't too worried as long as I was eating, drinking, keeping my temp down, and could breath. My doctor did say if by the 4th day I wasn't better I needed to go to the emergency room but thank God I was better by then.

Thank you for sharing, that makes me feel better to know.  I still haven't been able to get the flu shot due to the other pregnancy complications.  I hope to get one soon to give LO some immunity.
