Overnight Potty Training Help

Hi everyone - I have a potty training question.  DS1 (3.5) has been potty trained during the day for about a year and a half, and he's great about it.  Never any accidents.  He is still in diapers overnight though, and he wakes up soaked (I mean, a super heavy, wet diaper) every morning.  He doesn't usually get a drink (other a few sips of water) after dinner, and we have him go to the bathroom immediately before bed each night.  Is he just not ready yet to be trained overnight?  Do we try anything else, or just wait until he is waking up pretty dry on a consistent basis to take away his overnight diaper?  What worked for you?

    Overnight training can take much longer than day training.  Especially in boys.  One of my oldest son's friends still wears pullups at night because he still isn't overnight trained.  They cut off drinks after 5 except for a small glass of water at dinner and a 2 sips after he brushes his teeth.  They wake him at 11pm and take him to the bathroom but he still wets heavily overnight.  

    I would continue with the pullups and encourage him to go potty if he wakes up and needs to.  It will click eventually!

    I'd just keep on keeping on.

    My pedi told me once night training is something kids just "have to grow into" more than anything.

    I'm not looking forward to night training either. We're great at being day trained all of a sudden, but she still goes to bed with a sippy of water. She sleeps great and I'm not ready to screw with that for some time.

    Every kid is going to be different on this, but when we potty trained our son I read an e-book that convinced me to day and night train at the same time, if possible. The author's belief is that kids are more than ready at a much earlier age than most of us think. We trained our son for day and night right after he turned 2, and her methods worked. He's not perfect, but accidents are few and far between. Again, every kid will be different, but her book was a huge help. Her main argument is that as long as you've got your child in diapers, underwear or pull-ups, they'll won't learn to use the muscles they need to control themselves...so we did the naked thing. NEVER thought I'd do that!

    Anyway, it sounds like your son is already doing a great job, so I'm sure he can handle nighttime as well!

    I really have to disagree with this.  Your son is trained during the day so obviously wearing a diaper at night is not interfering with his muscles.  My DD started staying dry at night about 6 weeks after she was trained at day.  I was not planning on it happening that fast.  I wouldn't be worried at 3.5 either.  If you are you can talk to your pedi but your son sounds normal to me.

    I thought DD#1 was not ready, she woke up in a really wet pull up every morning.  I started realizing that if I went in her room earlier then her calling me she would get mad.  She was peeing in her pull up right before she called me.  I bribed her to stay dry and it worked...no more night time pull ups.

    My 4yr old still wears a pullup to bed.  It's dry 6 out of 7 mornings, but I'm just not into changing sheets in the middle of the night.

    I wore Pull Ups to bed until I was about 6. I was, obviously, fully potty trained but I was such a deep sleeper that I wouldn't wake up for the urge to urinate.

    Thankfully, my mom never made a big deal about it. Eventually, I "grew" to recognize the sensation and get up to go to the bathroom.
