Cleaning Bottles-Dishwasher enough?

Hello,

I will be a first time mother in March. We registered for and received a sterilizer for our Dr. Brown's bottles but I am wondering if it worth it or should we take it back. Shouldn't the dishwasher be enough to get the bottle clean without having to wash and then go through another step. Our dishwasher is very new and has a lot of features for steaming etc.

Interested in how others clean their bottles before using them.

I just run them through the dishwasher, works fine.

Top rack of the dishwasher should be fine. We have a sterilizer but we barely used it with our first kid.

I use the dishwasher but also have a bottle sterilizer. Sometimes I need stuff before I am ready to run a cycle of dishes, so that's where the sterilizer comes in handy.

This! We ended up getting one after about a week because I didn't want to run the dishwasher just for bottles.

Top shelf of the dishwasher or hand wash is fine. Take the sterilizer back and get something else.

Ditto this - we initially didn't get a sterilizer, but after being home from the hospital 2 days I sent DH out to BRU to pick up a microwave one. Otherwise we were running the dishwasher half empty 2-3 times a day!

On a side note, for those that use the dishwasher, do you use any particular detergent? I'm assuming/hoping regular dishwasher detergent is fine for babies (since I've been using it for a week and a half), but last night it occurred to me that maybe something gentler/with fewer chemicals (if that even exists) might be better for baby stuff?

We just use our dishwasher but sterilize the bottles once a week. You don't need to buy a sterilier, you should be able to sterilize bottles in boiling water on the stove. There should be instructions on the box. We did that before the first use and before washing them.

We handwash ours with regular dawn dish washing soap. There is no need to sanitize your baby bottles except for before the initial use.

I use a free and clear soap (Seventh Generation) both for handwashing and for the dishwasher. I put bottles in with other dishes in the dishwasher before I run it, otherwise I hand wash. No reason to wash in the dishwasher every time. Also after the first few months I stopped washing bottles every time I used them (couldn't do this until I was formula feeding). After LO was done eating I immediately rinse the bottle with hot water. Use it again the next 1-2 times he eats. I go through 5-6 bottles a day this way.

99% of the time I just hand washed them with one of the bottle brushes. If I had room in the dishwasher, I'd throw them in too. You'll never use the sanitizer, and there's absolutely zero need for it. Take it back and buy some diapers.

Adding to this that I just used plain ole blue Dawn. My kid's fine.

We just used the Cascade power packs that we use to wash our own dishes. Nothing special.
