summer trips...

Anyone else planning any trips with their families this summer?

We already have 3 trips planned and to be honest I am not looking forward to them except the one trip will be just my DH and I.  We are wanting to go somewhere tropical- all inclusive resort.  We are wanting to start trying for #2 this summer and wanted to have a final trip with just "us"  while we still can.

My parents decided to do an extended weekend and family renunion with all of my aunts and uncles and cousins and their kids.   So like 30 relatives all together for the weekend.  The bummer with this trip is we either have to drive 12 hours or fly.   And flying with a 16 month sounds freightening to me.   I just know how she doesn't like to sit now and cannot imagine that will change much when she starts walking.   Anyone fly with a 16 month old would that beat a long car drive?  But then there is the hassle that driving will take 2 days to do.

Then his parents want to do another extended weekend to the lake along with his sister.  THe problem here is his family want to do everything we did pre-baby.  Take the boat out, water-skiing, etc.  Their comment was we will just have to get our DD a big hat, wear lots of sunscreen and take shorter boat rides. Yet, my SIL will want to water ski the whole time. Again, maybe by summer DD can be out in the sun for  longer than I picture or maybe she will love riding in the boat. Just sounds like a pain in the butt to me :)

Maybe I am just griping as I realize both trips won't be too long.  Yet, I am not looking forward to either trip with the parents.   Who ever thought these kinds of "family trips" were a good idea?    So much for the plan to have a trip with just our family.

  • We're planning on being in France (Paris, then Provence) with my mom and grandmother for the month of May. That might get canned though because my 91 year old grandmother is starting to have a harder time getting around, so we'll see. Other than that, we'll definitely head back to LA to see family and maybe try and squeeze in a trip to some warm island somewhere. Or Iceland - I've always wanted to go there :)

  • Our 3 year anniversary is tomorrow. We have not taken a honeymoon yet. I am graduating this July and we are hoping to take a nice trip in August... Northern Europe probably. We haven't had a vacation in over 4 years so I can't freakin wait

  • So far, just a week at a cabin in Duluth, MN with DH's family. Hoping its way more fun than when we went last year, and Claire was only 6 weeks old. I pretty much was holed up in the cabin nursing, and trying to keep all the mosquitos off of Claire. It sucked.

  • I bet it will all be fun while you're there, but the huge family trips wouldn't be my cup of tea either, and it irks me when family plans this sort of stuff without discussing it -- I have tons of vacation time, but DH doesn't, so it would be a sacrifice to "spend" vacation time on something like that.  I'd much prefer just travel with DH and LO.

We don't have anything planned this summer, but hopefully some cabin time and at least a nice long weekend away just the two of us before baby is born in September... I have two girls weekends in the works for spring.

Amen, sister! Dh said those words to me after our first trip with ds1. We had to totally adjust our mentality about vacations so we wouldn't be disappointed each trip!!

Agreed! "Family vacation" is an oxymoron, as far as I'm concerned!

  • Sounds like fun. I would definitely fly over drive anytime.

In April or May Torrin and I alone are going to Virginia to visit my mom for a week. I will be a little nervous. I have never flown "alone" or with a baby. I am really excited though. Then sometime in the summer we will all go for a shorter trip and work around SO's schedule.

We are also planning a weekend getaway that is only 3 hours driving to a big zoo and an aquarium! Yes, I really am out in the middle of nowhere.

Before I have another child I want to do a big vacation. Cruise, all inclusive resort, or Christmas and New Years in NYC. It would be ok if I was in my first or second tri pregnant again. I feel like Torrin deserves a big vacation with just the 3 of us.

If you have the means to fly, do it.  I would recommend a seat for the baby if your flight is over 2 hours.  If your flight is 2 hours or less, just put him in your lap, he might be active, but shouldn't be so obnoxious.  We took a 3.5 hour flight at 14 months and it royally sucked.  But a couple months later for a 60-90 minute flight, he did fine on my lap.  Just bring a few smallish toys he likes, lots of snacks, and just know the flight will not in anyway be "relaxing".  If you can align the flight with nap or bedtime, all the better, he'll pass out from  the droning of the plane.  If I can take a cross-country flight with an 11 month old by myself (in the lap for that one, but less mobile then he was for the 3.5 hour flight), you can definitely do it with a 16 mo with your DH.

Also, I wouldn't keep yourself from doing stuff just because of the baby.  Sunscreen is great, hats are great.  They have swim suits/rash guards that are 50+spf.  You can always stay back if you think it'll be too much or it's nap time.   But at 16 months we were taking our son everywhere with us, including full back to back days at Disneyland and Universal Studios.  Was it easy?  No, but we still had a decent time.
