Peanut allergy?

I posted this on the food allergies board but haven't had any responses.  I wanted to get some opinions on this:

I am following up with DS's doc but haven't gotten an appointment yet. Sunday my 15 month old had pb for the first time. Just a tiny bit. About 3 to 4 hours later he had red splotches on his face. They cleared up the next morning and didnt seem itchy. He was around a new clothing detergent at my moms and had his chicken pox vaccine last Thursday. No idea if that could be related. Does this sound like a peanut allergy? I ask because of the time delay between him eating it and the splotches appearing on his face.

I hope it was the detergent my mom used on her clothes.  She also had a new lotion on her skin that he was nuzzling up against.  So many variables!  Probably not the best time to give him pb but I hadn't realized she had on all this new stuff.  The nurse at his peds office said it could be anything so they want me to make a follow up appointment which I'm going to do.   He's fine again today thankfully.

Re: Peanut allergy?

  • Glad he is OK today. The nurse is right, it could be anything. Talk to your pedi at your follow up he may suggest trying the peanut butter again during office hours and calling if there is a problem.

  • It could be a number of things. Like @chricast said, try PB again during office hours and see what happens.

My SD has a ton of food allergies. Sometimes her face will get blotchy but not itchy. Also, if I eat hot sauce and get it on my face, I get really blotchy and my lips swell but I don't get itchy. (I can't eat wings unless I'm alone or I get made fun of.... Lol)

  • Thanks!  Trying again during office hours would make me feel a lot better.  It's got me really nervous because I had read that if it was a peanut allergy and it was a mild reaction doesn't mean I can count on the next reaction being mild as well.

On a hot wing note - I'm totally self conscious about eating them in public even without an allergy. I can never manage to eat them without giving myself a hot sauce joker smile. :)

  • DH fed SD peanut butter for the first time in a hospital parking lot. You could try that!
