Babies: 6 - 9 Months

How long can formula be refrigerated?

I mixed formula and breast milk last night.  I don't think we are going to use it today, do I have to trash it, or can I save it until Monday?

Re: How long can formula be refrigerated?

  • 24 hours if baby hasn't taken a drink from it.

Can I slightly highjack this post? I thought formula had to be used within an hour of being mixed, and breastmilk alone the longer multiple day rule (unless it was drank from)? Is there a different rule if BM & formula are combined? Sorry - we are about to transition from BM to formula so I am just trying to understand the responses to this! :)
Sure thing.  I don't know about BM and formula being mixed together, but this is from my box of Enfamil:

Either feed immediately or cover and store in refrigerator for no longer than 24 hours.  Do not use formula if it's been unrefridgerated for more than a total of 2 hours.

It's an hour if the baby drinks from it. 2 hours if the baby never touches it. 24 hours in the fridge. So if you make a 6oz bottle and the baby drinks an ounce, the rest is good for an hour from the start of the feeding. If you make a 6oz bottle and put it on the counter and the baby fell asleep so you never gave it- 2 hours. We make a large batch of formula in the Dr. Brown's pitcher and use it within 24 hours.

I believe it has to do with the bacteria that starts to grow in the formula once it's exposed to saliva. That and the immature digestive system of an infant not being able to handle those germs. But I'm not 100% on that.

  • When I supplemented, I also mixed the two together, but technically I think the *best* way to do it is to feed the BM and fill the empty bottle with formula after. That way you don't waste BM and they get those nutrients first.
